I like the history, and I don't want to change it." Editor Says PLO Will Reject Shamir Offer In an editorial in U.S. News World Report, editor-in-chief Mortimer Zuckerman predicted that Yitzhak Shamir's offer of free elec- tions in the West Bank and Gaza will be turned down by the Palestine Liberation Organization. The group, stated Zuckerman, has "a higher priority than a better life for Palestinians. That is the destruction of Israel!' The Shamir proposal, said Zuckerman, "would at once give Palestinians a greater say in running their own lives, would see Israeli soldiers withdraw into a few relatively unpopulated pockets and would open the way to a permanent deal in maybe three to five years on borders, land and sovereign- ty." But PLO insistence on their own state in the West Bank — and, eventually, ac- cording to Zuckerman, in all of Israel itself — may doom the plan. "Palestinians," advised Zuckerman, must understand that "a PLO state in the West Bank is an impossible dream — a dream that would become a nightmare not only to Israel, but to Jordan!' Both Israel and Jordan, wrote Zuckerman, would be endangered by a PLO state taken over by "a Palestinian Khomeini," a distinct possibility, according to the U.S. News chief, since 80 per- cent of Palestinians in Gaza and 45 percent in the West Bank are "reborn Moslems!' Zuckerman chided the news media in the West for "suspending its disbelief" about the reputedly new Yassir Arafat and his reform- ed PLO. The Palestinian leader, wrote Zuckerman, recently said he "is not seek- ing the peace of compromise, but the peace of Saladin — an unmistakable code in the Arab world since Saladin is the Moslem warrior who over- came the Crusaders, conclud- ed an armistice and then at- tacked them again until they were driven out." ❑ - 'it--I. y.
