Soviet Jews'
Destination

Your editorial of April 14,
"Funding Freedom," fails to
include the words State of
Israel.
When the Soviet Union
opened the emigration gates,
the arrival country was and is
Israel. Asking for help so that
Soviet Jews do not have to ar-
rive in Israel makes little
sense, unless what is meant is
the beginning of an organiz-
ed disengagement from
Israel's survival.
Finally, your statement
"now is the time to get them
out" does not relate to the
subject matter of the
editorial. Pleas for funding
should not deal in such
confusion.
Hopefully, your readers do
understand where the major-
ity of these funds are to be
directed and will act accor-
dingly when asked.

Cohen Story
Was Poignant

Out of a sense of obligation
to the Six Million who perish-
ed, I read everything I can
about the Holocaust. Nothing
has been more instantly
wrenching, poignant or ex-
pressive than the Western
Union message "HELP" seen
in the April 28 Close-Up ar-
ticle so brilliantly written by
Shari Cohen. This feature
story should be required
reading in every high school
English class.

Wrong Impression

The article appearing April
28 on Page 5 of The Jewish
News, "Shema Yisrael Sends
Mailing," gives the impres-
sion that The Jewish News is
in support of the Messianic
movement. It seems more like
a news release written by
Shema Yisrael than a news
story published by a Jewish
newspaper.

There is enough expertise
in the community to present
a truly Jewish point of view.
Jews for Judaism, the Kollel
Institute, Rabbi Jacobovitz,
Rabbi Talon or Rabbi Gold-
berg are but a few sources
that should have been con-
tacted for a Jewish perspec-
tive .. .

Do Black Leaders
Back Farrakhan?

National Public Radio on
April 24 reported that Jesse
Jackson and Coretta Scott
King spoke at a summit of
African Americans in New
Orleans at which Louis Far-
rakhan was also an invited
speaker. They reported that
1,000 people attended though
4,000 had been expected, and
that the entire Congressional
Black Caucus, the NAACP,
the Urban League and
numerous other black leaders
boycotted the meeting.
I would appreciate it if The
Jewish News would run a
story on the conference. It is
important for us to know that
Jesse Jackson continues his
association with Farrakhan.
And we need to know more
about the division in the
black community over this
issue. It would, I believe, be
helpful if the Jewish com-
munity kenw that so many
black leders have the moral
courage to isolate Farrakhan
— if indeed that is why they
refused to attend.
I was very disappointed to
hear that Coretta Scott King
was willing to speak on the
same platform with Far-
rakhan. Perhaps one of your
staff could call her and ask
her why she would lend her
name to an event in which he
was an invited speaker.

What Happened
To Sitting Shiva?

What has happened to our
practice of sitting shiva?
From my experience, it is
completely demoralized,
bears no resemblance to its
traditional intent of mourn-
ing, of gathering around the
bereaved to share their sor-
row and our own. Instead, I
witness a "party at-
mosphere": food, drinks,
animated conversation,
laughter.
My sensibilities are totally
offended. Are we such a jad-
ed society; is grieving an old-
fashioned, outdated practice,
no longer to be countenanced?
