Broadway Bound — Charone
has never seen a Simon play).
A native of Chicago, he was
also quick to point out that he
didn't really draw on his own
background as he prepared
for his role in Simon's semi-
autobiographical play, set in
Brooklyn's Brighton Beach
area in the late 1940s.
"This is Neil Simon's
background, but it is not my
background," he emphasized.
"Oh, there's the Jewish fami-
ly culture that I understand,
yes. But you have to
remember that there's all the
difference in the world in the
Jew brought up in Brighton
Beach, and the Jew who lives
in Chicago or somewhere else.
Those who have lived in
Chicago have done a different
type of assimilation than the
Jewish person in New York.
"Besides, when you've done
as many plays as I have, all
ethnic qualities begin to
blend, anyhow, and I don't
have to go back into that. I'm
sure people who aren't Jewish
are sitting in the audience
and saying, 'My God, I had a
grandfather just like that!'
"So, what I use is just a
distillation of different people
that I've seen and met and
known over the years. As an
actor, you're tucking away
those bits and pieces of infor-
mation all the time.
"I see Ben as a man who
considers himself the
patriarch in the family. With
everything he tries to say or
do, he has the intent of
delivering knowledge. He
truly believes that, because
he's arrived at a particular
stage in life, what he says is
the way things should be
done. I, myself, never had a
father or a grandfather like
that, but, actually, I had a
grandmother who was very
much like (Ben)."
"But I don't know what the
future holds. I guess I'll just
let the big director sit up
there and I'll sit down here
and just let it happen. I have
no complaints so far. I really
have enjoyed it. I've had no
bad experiences along the
way — no scenery falling on
my head, nothing like that."
No bad experiences at all?
Well, there is that problem
with the make-up.

"I want to get that stuff off

as
soon as possible after a per-
,
formance," he said. "If you
have to meet somebody when
you're wearing make-up, I get
nervous. I really do. God,
that's terrible! That's the
worst!" E
