IN THE NEW ART DECO VILLAGE COMMONS MALL • PHONE 471-DAWG L_ 70 FRIDAY, APRIL 28, 1989 hile a registered pharmacist and owner of Grove Drugs downriver back in 1979, Marty Benson had diabetic and calorie-conscious customers who would tell him about how much they loved ice cream but couldn't eat any . . . Especially diabetics, to whom the word sugar is poison. And so began the saga of how an ex-pharmacist, now co-owner of the American Bulk Foods chain with. Nate Fink, went on a four-year trial-and-error campaign that began in his and wife Sandy's kitchen . . . and further tested in the laboratory of their Dearborn store and corporate offices . . . In 1987, he in- troduced his finished product. Today, Marty's sugar-free soft-serve Slimmery ice cream is the wonder that diabetics have hoped for . . . and the dream calorie-conscious folks can enjoy without guilt. It is a soft and creamy dessert completely sugar-free and 98 percent fat-free with only 60 calories in an eight- ounce serving. Sugar-free, soft-serve Slim- mery is available in this area only at American Bulk Food on Orchard Lake Road, south of Maple, in the West Bloom- field Plaza . . . It can be got- ten in 50 different flavors .. . from butter pecan, fudge, cherry, lemon, raspberry, strawberry, banana, candy cane, etc. . . . including a host of fruit varieties . . . plus, of course, the conventional vanilla and chocolate. Even the oodles of delicious toppings, from hot fudge on, are also sugar-free. Most ice creams have from 16 to 22 percent butterfat .. . Slimmery has only 2 percent . . . and easily meets the guidelines of both the American Heart Association and American Diabetic Association. Plus it's almost 1,500 items, the American Bulk Food store on Orchard Lake Road in West Bloomfield, run by Sandy and Marty's son, Mitch, is a veritable health ice cream parlor . . . with five tables and 10 chairs . . . where other than carry-out, people cr.n eat plain Slim- mery . . . or sundaes of choices among six sugarless toppings . . . hot fudge (also caffeine- free), cherry, strawberry, pineapple, apple and blueberry. There's even a complete Slimmery Department now at American Bulk Food in West Bloomfield Plaza . . . with a pastry case full of Slimmery products . . . cheese cakes (blueberry, cherry, pineapple), black forest cakes, tortes, mousse (rocky road, chocolate, lemon, strawberry), French creme rolls, shortcakes (vanilla, strawberry, blue- berry, cherry, pineapple, apple, coconut) . . . plus a lineup that'll make most bakeries drool . . Brownies, apple streudels, individual and large pumpkin pies, cream horns, fruit fluffs, banana cream pies, chocolate cream pies, mousse cream pies, light puddings, jelly rolls, filled eclairs, filled cream puffs, etc. . . . and all sugar-free! Also sugar-free muffins .. . oat bran, blueberry, cherry nut, apple cinnamon, raisin spice, etc. . . . among 30 varieties that are baked daily. Mitch worked at Grove Drug Store for dad and is always halping develop new products . . . Sandy and Mar- ty sent him to work with Manfred Zette in St. Louis, who specialized in low-calorie cuisine at his restaurant .. . The popular sugarless French creme rolls are among Mitch's concoctions. Those muffins, by the way, at American Bulk Food on Orchard Lake Road are load- ed with no's . . . No sugar, no cholesterol, no eggs, no milk, no animal fat or protein .. . and two yesses . . . They're kosher . . . and quite delicious. In other words, folks giving up calories and added sugar do not have to give up sweet treats . Sugar-free candies are another specialty . . . with bins containing goodies galore. American Bulk Food in West Bloomfield opened its dors Oct. 11, 1988 . . . and is a seven-day-a-week operation . . . Monday through Satur- day, 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Those former customers of Marty Benson when he was a practicing registered phar- macist not only spurred him into a happy, healthful ven- ture, but are no doubt themselves a joyful lot these days. Slimmery can be compared somewhat as enjoying sin without the sin. ORDERING an A&W Root Beer during May will salute work of the Arthritis Founda- tion . . . "Help Bear Their Pain" is the catchy name given to a serious fundraiser sponsored by A&W Restau- rants . . . 10 cents will be donated to the Arthritis Foundation for every frosted mug of A&W Root Beer sold. Arthritis is a serious disease . . . far more devastating than the minor aches and pains many people look on it to be . . . The facts about arthritis are staggering . . . More than 37 million Americans have some form of arthritis, including some Sugar-free, fat free, low-cal and delicious . . . in 50 different flavors. 71,000 children with rheumatoid arthritis . . . In almost all cases, arthritis is chronic . . . Often this painful disease affects people be- tween the ages of 20 and 50. Probably the worst problem about arthritis is the "image" most of us have when we hear somebody has this disease .. . Most people think it only af- fects elder folks and arthritis can't be very serious . . . that it is only "minor aches and pains." . . . This is a fallacy, a myth . . . It is horribly pain- ful . . . On bad days, writing, eating or getting out of bed is nearly impossible . . . and there is no cure . . . Medica- tion is expensive and often has damaging side effects. Exercise and rest are critical to treating arthritis, but many often avoid exercise because of the pain or do not properly rest themselves .. . The Arthritis Foundation conducts self-help courses teaching how to adapt to the changes the body is going through, and how to avoid the depression that so often ac- companies the disease . . . If interested, call Dawn Hafeli, Metro Detroit Branch direc- tor, 350-3030. Monies raised by A&W Root Beer sales will be used to sup- port both research and local programs like the Arthritis Self Help Course and Help Line, where questions are answered and information is sent out free of charge.
