levels of Jewish organiza-
tional life who are in fact
married to converts.
These machers cried "foul"
and ran to Israel to kill "Who
Is a Jew" to insure that their
wives and children are still
considered legit. These men
carry on about "pluralism"
and "democracy" in Judaism,
but what is at stake? A con-
cern by men that their
women, too, are "authentic!'
according to rules that they
make.
For women to be full par-
ticipants in Jewish life — this
is the dream of liberation. Un-
fortunately, "Who Is a Jew"
only revealed the undeniable
antagonism and hostility that
Jewish men so often have
toward their sisters, mothers
and the girl next door —
women of their own faith.
Sad to say, the syndrome
which keeps women out of
power, that keeps Judaism an
Old Boy Network, is also part
of the syndrome which leads
to intermarriage.
Neither Orthodox men nor
liberal men have records on
the inclusion of women in
leadership that are anything
to write home about.
At the recent International
Feminist Conference in
Jerusalem on the Empower-
ment of Jewish Women, Bella
Abzug pleaded on behalf of
Jewish women, "Though we
were trained to speak softly
and carry a lipstick, we are
demanding a seat at the table
where decisions are made!'
Isn't it amazing that after
20 years of feminism, her plea
still rings true? Sexism is in-
stitutionalized on so many
levels of Jewish communal
life: men still control the cam-
paigns, the money, and
women are still consigned to
lower-level policy.
Jewish women most often
still have power and visibili-
ty through women-only
groups like National Council
of Jewish Women and Had-
assah: separate but equal?
Even the "solution" to
"Who Is a Jew" is a vestige of
the patriarchy: the con-
vergence of a Bet Din, or rab-
binic court, which would
ostensibly unify conversion
practice among the four
movements. Tell me, which
women will be seated at that
dais when the rabbis meet?
The irony is that Jewish
tradition itself recognizes
that women have different
skills in positions of power,
skills which would benefit the
society as whole. Male power
