Grand Rapids Honors 2
At Israel Bonds Event

The Grand Rapids com-
munity will pay tribute to
communal leaders Geneva
Smith and Jerry Subar at a
State of Israel Bond Dinner 6
p.m. June 6 at the Amway
Grand Plaza Hotel.
Smith and Subar will
receive the State of Israel's
Jerusalem Awards, "in
recognition of their outstan-
ding support of Israel's
economic development?'
Sponsoring the tribute
event are Congregation
Ahavas Israel and Temple
Emanuel in Grand Rapids.
Dinner co-chairmen are Ed-
ward A. Miller and Stuart
Rapaport. Honorary chair-
man is Hy Berkowitz.
Smith is a member of
Hadassah and was a co-
founder and transportation
chairman of Chai. Her con-
cern for the elderly led to the
establishment of Congrega-
tion Ahavas Israel's Kesher
Committee, which she chairs.
She has also served as a
member of the Hevra
Kadisha and seating commit-
tees and she has served as co-
chairman of adult education
and the First Seder
committees.
As a member of the Ahavas
Israel Sisterhood, she held
positions ranging from cor-
responding secretary to presi-
dent. She became the first
woman elected to the Ahavas
Israel board of trustees. She
has been active with Israel
Bonds since its founding.
Subar has served on the
board of directors of the Ur-
ban League and Junior
Achievement, and is active on
the board of the local chapters
of the American Civil Liber-
ties Union and the Kent Op-
timist Club and the Kent
County Sheriff's Honor
Camp. Subar was also a
charter member of the
Greater Grand Rapids
Chamber of Commerce's Am-
bassador's Club.
Subar has also served the
Jewish community of Grand
Rapids with more than 20
years on the board of directors
of Congregation Ahavas
Israel, where he co-chaired
the adult education program;
was chairman of the religious
school board and seved on the
joint executive committee of
Ahavas Israel and Temple
Emanuel.
Subar also is a past presi-
dent of the Jewish Communi-
ty Fund of Grand Rapids, a
vice president of the
Michigan Regional Advisory
Board of the Anti-Defamation
League of B'nai B'rith, was a
