Participating in the seder ritual are, from left: Cathy Lichtman, Judy Lipshutz and Dr. Ted Duncan. open to anyone who has a willingness to come, singles or couples, Dressler said. The fee is $220 per couple, $155 for singles and there is a $60 charge for materials. Each student is provided with a binder which includes in- structional materials, background information on the holidays (and Shabbat), recipes, prayers, blessings and bibliographies. Students also receive cassette tapes of holi- day and service music, Shab- bat songs and blessings. In addition to studying the materials, the students must hear lectures. They also will have a demonstration on a craft project relevant to the unit they are studying. For example, on Chanukah, each class member will make decorations for the home or edible dreidels out of mar- shmallows. The class will build and decorate a sukkah for Sukkot. For the lesson on Havdallah, the students will have a practice ceremony in class and then go to a classmate's home where they will affix a mezuzah and have a ceremony, inviting their spouses and children. Prior to doing any of the observances or rituals at home the class does them together at the temple. "They feel more comfortable in the temple," Dressler said. "They can make mistakes and they can get help." Kohn, a group therapist, is the administrator and teacher for the program, while Dressler acts as a con- sultant. The temple's rabbi, Lane Steinger, conducts a life cycle class, and Cantor Nor- man Rose will drop in for a lecture or presentation. "It's pretty much the teacher's show," Dressler said. "The teacher ties it all together." But the students are taught that their class is not an end in itself. "We give people an understanding of what their heritage is," Dressler said. "We can only expose them and tell them what it is. They make the decision where they go from there." Those who complete the series are awarded a cer- tificate at a Shabbat gradua- tion ceremony. That service also kicks off recruitment for next year's class. Some students have repeated the series because they wanted more informa- tion or just did not want to leave. Dressler said. Dressler is looking to start a similar class in the West Bloomfield area. She also would like to attract some Conservative Jews as well. The class has also helped the temple. Some non- members who took the class eventually joined the temple. Many who already belonged to the temple became more active. Members of the first class formed a chavurah. "We encourge the students to form a chavurah to continue study," Dressler said. Temple member Dr. Carl Dibble, a Jew-by-choice, prais- ed the program for its com- bination of hands-on ac- tivities, study and camaraderie. A professor of education, he called the pro- gram gratifying. "You pick up in a short time a lot of lore, symbolism, a sense of family, a sense of generation, of in- volvement. It is the nearest substitute to a good Jewish upbringing." "The best part of the class is the camaraderie that developed, the strong Jewish identity," Cohen said. "Everyone hated to see it end." Teacher Kohn attributes the success of the class to the opportunities it presents to adults for learning about their heritage. "It is a living, learning situation, " she said. "That's what makes this class sing." 111 Rental Rates — from $ 640 including utilities, emergency monitoring system, activities, transportation and wellness center.
