Small, Yellow Candles Sustain
The Memory Of The Six Million

STAFF REPORT

F

rom

a single candle
grew more than 50,000
lights, glowing in the
black night erev Yom
Hashoah, Holocaust
Memorial Day, which will be
observed this year on
Monday.
The Yom Hashoah Yellow
Yahrtzeit Candle is a project
of the Federation of Jewish
Men's Clubs. Local
synagogues participating in
the program, which en-
courages individuals to place
burning candles in their win-
dows to remember victims of
the Holocaust, are Congrega-
tions B'nai Moshe, Beth
Shalom, Shaarey Zedek, Beth
Abraham Hillel Moses, Beth
Achim and Adat Shalom
Synagogue.
The Yellow Yahrtzeit Can-
dle project was started by Joe
Winokur of Danvers, Mass., to
memorialize the death of his
father, Wolf, a Holocaust sur-
vivor. After learning of a
Canadian group's program of
memorializing the Six
Million by delivering
yahrtzeit candles to con-
gregants before Yom
Hashoah, Joe Winokur decid-
ed to remember in a similar
way his father and Jews
murdered by the Nazis.
First, Winokur approached
the brotherhood of his own
congregation. Later, the pro-
ject was adopted by the New
England Region of the
Federation of Jewish Men's
Clubs and, in 1987, by the en-
tire membership of the
federation.
By 1988, the men's clubs
had distributed more than
50,000 candles to congregants
throughout the United
States. Contained in a small
glass, the yahrtzeit candle
bears a paper label reading
"Remember the Six Million"
and includes a depiction of
the yellow star Nazis forced
Jews to wear at all times. In-
tertwined with the star is a
strand of barbed wire to sym-
bolize Hitler's death camps.

Also included with the
yahrtzeit candle, which is to
burn for at least 24 hours, is
a meditation Winokur
selected with the assistance
of the Rabbinical Assembly. It
reads in part, "As I light this
memorial candle I vow never
to forget the lives of the
Jewish men, women and
children who are symbolized
by this flame . . . so that we
may help to ensure that part

of who they were shall endure
always."
Dr. Harvey Nussbaum, past
president of the men's club of
Adat Shalom and interna-
tional chairman of adult
education for the Federation
of Men's Clubs, is in charge of
the project locally. Helping
coordinate the program in the
Detroit area are Alan Leven-
son of B'nai Moshe; David
Goldis of Beth Achim;
Leonard Baruch of Shaarey
Zedek; Alfred Cowan of Beth
Abraham Hillel Moses;
Harold Baker of Beth Achim;
Steve Westerman of Adat

Shalom; and Jay Waldman of
Beth Shalom.
Nussbaum stressed that the
Yellow Yahrtzeit Candle Pro-
gram, while a project of Con-
servative congregations, is
open to everyone.
"A unique aspect of the Yom
Hashoah Yellow Yahrtzeit
Candle Program is that it
transcends all," he said. "The
program has been used by Or-
thodox, Reform and
Reconstructionist as well as
Conservative congregations,
and by non-Jewish religious
institutions and organiza-
tions."
