revealed in a recent poll joint-
ly commissioned by the
Washington Post and ABC

News.
Six out of 10 respondents
doubted that peace in the
Middle East will be achieved
in the next 10 years.
Half of those interviewed
said they support the
establishment of a homeland
for the Palestinians.
Support for Israel has
recently rebounded. Six out of
10 polled had a favorable view
of Israel, up by 20 percent
from a poll conducted two
months ago.
Despite Yassir Arafat's re-
cent statements that he has
renounced terrorism, eight
out of 10 Americans say they
have an unfavorable impres-
sion of the PLO.
More than six out of 10
respondents said they do not
believe Arab leaders want
peace. Half said Israel is not
sincere in its desire to solve
its differences with its Arab
neighbors.
In the Near East Report, the
weekly publication of the
American Israel Public Af-
fairs Committee, editor Mit-
chell Bard stated that "the
most revealing finding" of the
Post ABC survey "was that
only 8 percent of the
respondents are 'very
familiar' with the conflict bet-
ween Israel and the Palesti-
nians; nearly half are un-
familiar. Despite the media
barrage and the unyielding
assumption of public interest,
most Americans are not parti-
cularly interested or inform-
ed about Middle East issues.
It is, nevertheless, evident
that the overwhelming ma-
jority support Israel and ap-
preciate US.-Israeli ties. For
the 'Chicken Littles' who say
American support for Israel is
eroding, the latest finding
confirms yet again that the
sky remains overhead."

Detroit Paper
Finds Deaths

Last week it was noted here
that the Detroit Free Press
edited a recent New York
Times dispatch from Israel
that it subtly implied that the
Israeli military condones set-
tlers' use of military-supplied
weapons.
Now the Free Press is put-
ting things in headlines
which are not supported by
the story. In the Sunday,
April 23 edition, this
headline apeared: "18 Die in
Gaza, West Bank." The story
merely stated, "Troops shot
and wounded 18 Palestinians
in clashes Saturday . ."
