building and threatening
anti-Semitic phone calls had
been made to the paper in the
last year. The security
measures included bars on all
windows, infrared detection
devices and security cameras
to protect the newspaper's
seven full-time employees.
Anonymous phone calls
over the past year have in-
cluded such threats as "The
bars won't stop bullets" and
"Jewish newspapers don't
belong in El Cajon." No such
calls were received in the days
preceding the firebombing.
"The damage was more
psychological than physical,"
Carol Rosenberg said after
returning to work Monday
morning.
Morris Casuto, regional
director of the ADL, said he
had alerted police some
weeks ago to possible anti-
Semitic incidents in connec-
tion with the 100th anniver-
sary of Adolf Hitler's birth on
April 20.
El Cajon, an incorporated
community on the eastern
edge of San Diego, has no
specific history of anti-
Semitism, Casuto said. In a
long-planned ceremony, the
El Cajon city council
presented a resolution to the
ADL on Tuesday in recogni-
tion of Holocaust Memorial
Day.

Temple Mount
Remains Quiet

Jerusalem (JTA) — Violence
continued in the ad,minis-
tered territories during the
weekend and four died during
clashes with security forces in
Hebron. _
There were no disturbances
during noon prayer services
Friday at the Al-Aksa mosque
on the Temple Mount, thanks
to security precautions. In a
giant show of force, some
3,000 police officers were
deployed to maintain order on
the site, constituting almost
half the number of
worshipers.
Only 7,000 Arabs came to
pray, compared to the 20,000
who showed up a week earli-
er, on a Friday that ended in
unprecedented violence.
Most of the worshipers
seemed to have been deterred
by roadblocks set up to ban
Palestinians from the ter-
ritories, by frequent police
checkups and by a new re-
quirement to deposit their
identity cards upon entrance
to the holy site.
