"Why should the Christian nation concept be frighten- ing?"Evan Mecham former governor, asked during a telephone interview. "Historically, this is a Christian nation guarantee- ing freedom to all. I'll fight for everyone's right to worship or not. But, in my opinion, this is a Christian nation. I didn't make it so, but this is the case." The cited resolution, passed by the Arizona Republican Party at its annual state con- vention on Jan. 28, declared the United States to be "a Christian nation." The convention was con- trolled by Mecham sup- porters, according to reports, and the resolution was one of several with a right-wing slant. Several weeks later, the party's executive committee voted to include new language in the resolution that said the Republican Par- ty was open to all people, no matter of what religion. "My feeling is that it is great to live in a Christian country," Mecham said. "I belong to a minority group myself. Anti-Semitism is the farthest thing from my mind. I don't think we are arguing doctrine here, but principles. The Jewish people are very sensitive and I am very sen- sitive, too." Mecham is a Mormon. Mecham also criticized Bur- ton Kruglick, the state GOP chairman, who is Jewish, on the resolution. "He was there (at the convention), but didn't make a fuss while it was hap- pening," the former governor said. "I believe the ADL then pressured Kruglick. They want to keep things stirred up. They apparently want to intimidate people to prevent them from speaking out." Jerry Wisotsky, chairman of ADL's Arizona regional board of directors, also denied Mecham's assertion, saying it was"totally untrue." Mecham was impeached by the Republican-controlled House on Feb. 5, 1988, and charged with obstructing justice, misusing state money and concealing a campaign loan. The Republican-controlled Senate convicted him on the obstruction and money charges. A jury subsequently cleared him of the third charge. / \ Developer Helps JNF Build Lake In Desert Timna, Israel (JTA) — About 20 miles north of Eilat and 10 miles east of nowhere a man-made lake sits smack in the middle of the Negev. The place is Timna Valley National Park, a natural wonderland that has been around since the fourth cen- tury B.C.E. Iten compasses 17,500 acres of archaeological and geological formations, in- cluding rare rock formations, exotic wild animals, sand- stone arches and mountains of breathtaking views. Imagine driving through a hot desert, with sand and rock your only vista. Sudden- ly you come upon a 4-acre lake, with boats sailing at one corner, kids splashing in a kiddie pool at another, and adults swimming at a third. A mirage caused by too much sun? No, this the real thing, not from God but from man. One man. A spry, irrepressible 75-year-old, Avrum Chudnow of Milwaukee, a land devel- oper in Wisconsin and Florida. "When we first came out in 1983," he said, "and we — the Jewish National Fund — de- cided to help develop Timna, the first request by the regional council was, 'we need a lake for recreational pur- poses, for the kibbutzim around here, because they have nothing.' " "It's a wonderful thing," Gi- deon Patt, the minister of- tourism, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, "because many people who come to Eilat just sit in Eilat and soak in the water of the Red Sea. Patt said his ministry has invested $6 million toward an initial fund of $30 million, "mainly to introduce a new phase of tourism in Israel — desert tourism." The latest attraction at the park is the Timna Center, a gazebo that houses a 140-seat restaurant. N
