JUST ONE LOOK AND YOU'LL BE HOOKE people, the Extension Group offers travel and theater, writers' and discussion sub- groups plus bowling, ethnic dining, Yiddish lessons, poker, bridge groups and ballroom dance lessons. Another group, called "Cut- ters and Pasters", features ar- tistic members who are responsible for party decorations. The Group hopes to form choral, Pan and walking sub- groups and the organization also maintains contact with a Chicago counterpart. Says Hirsch, "We have been fortunate to have people come in at the very beginning who became part of it and made it work." The Extension Group has its own bylaws which, Hirsch says, not only specify when and how elections are held, but also detail financing for new activities sub-groups. "We do watch and try not to get involved, but just make sure our special interest groups keep within certain rules and regulations," Hirsch explains. "This keeps me young — no, it keeps me crazy," laughs Hirsch, a retired auto salesman. About 40 to 50 percent of the JCCenter's Single Parent Family Club are age 40 and up, Gunsberg says. The group's first activity, a spaghetti and bingo party for parents and children, drew 65 people. "There were kids ages 3 to 13, but they all played together beautifully," Gunsberg notes. A picnic and kite day at Camp Ruth and an Oneg Shabbat potluck din- ner are planned. Debra Waldman is the layperson coordinating activities. Solo, the Temple Israel group, hopes to help single parents connect socially as well as with their children, says Sherrie Stern, the group's director. She says the group will decide whether it will be a parents-only group or will in- clude children in activities. For now, she says, the group makes it possible for non- custodial parents to meet others in the same situation without bringing their children. Stern says Solo offers an alternative to JCCenter pro- grams. For one thing, she says, "Nobody likes to be at- tached to a group with the word 'singles' at the end of its name." Solo, she says, is "a small, intimate group — a person does not have to walk into a large atmosphere. It's on a smaller scale than what the Center has had." ❑ Parents Plan Picnic, Garden The Jewish Community Center's Single Parent Family Club will hold a pic- nic and kite day on Sunday, 12:30-2:30 p.m., at 'the Maple/Drake building, Camp Ruth II.
