ed after Beth Shalom's "A
Night At The Races" program
in 1988 drew 75 singles
"without a mailing list — just
by word-of-mouth and
through The Jewish News,"
Alicia Nelson said.
"At the evaluation after-.
ward, we realized the route to
go was not to have one suc-
cessful singles group within a
synagogue, but to have a
community-wide group.
"We found there was an in-
terest among certain singles
to feel there is a place for
them within their respective
synagogues." ❑

A

singles organization
for Conservative Jews
ages 25 to 40 has been
formed under the aegis of the
rabbis from six synagogues.
The new group, as yet un-
named, is based on similar
organizations in Boston,
Washington, D.C., and San
Francisco, according to Alicia
Nelson, the group's voluntary
coordinator.
The group will follow a
monthly Friday night format,
with a synagogue service
preceding a social event, she
said.
The first event, featuring
Jeffrey Zaslow, advice colum-
nist for the Chicago Sun-
Times, is tentatively schedul-
ed for June 2 at Adat Shalom,
she said. Corinne Stavish, a
professional storyteller from
Detroit, is scheduledfor Aug.
4 at Shaarey Zedek. Pro-
grams for Sept. 8 and Oct. 13
will be announced after the
group's steering committee,
made up of two singles from
each congregation, meets
Aug. 25 to evaluate the first
two programs. ,
The rabbis, on behalf of
their synagogues, said they
would underwrite refresh-
ment costs, but overall fun-
ding has yet to be worked out,
Nelson said.
The rabbis and their con-
gregations are Nelson's hus-
band, David, of Beth Shalom;
Allan Meyerowitz of B'nai
Moshe; Efry Spectre of Adat
Shalom; A. Irving Schnipper
of Beth Abraham Hillel
Moses; Milton Arm, Beth
Achim; and Irwin Groner,
Shaarey Zedek.
