Actors, Non-Actors Help Variety
Group Assist Children In Need
DANNY RASKIN
Local Columnist
W
arren Pierce, one of
the honorees, said it
best with the simple
words, "Not enought people
know Variety Club. I don't
think it gets enough publi-
city."
It was at the annual
Celebrity Ball put on by
Variety Club of Detroit in
Westin Hotel . . . with danc-
ing and singing by Rita
Moreno . . . backed by the fine
Johnny Trudell Orchestra.
Awards were . . . Margot
and Warren Coville, com-
munity service; Warren
Pierce, media; Jack Morris,
sports; Bill Marcus, Pioneer
of Variety; and Richard
Kughn, Humanitarian.
Variety Club of Detroit Tent
5 is probably one of the best
kept secrets around . . . Not
that the group wants it as
such, but just seems to be a
sleeper of excellence in
charitable work.
There are even people who
actually think Variety Club is
where old actors and ac-
tresses congregate . . . Not
enough known of the magnifi-
cent work done by this group,
whose $95 a year membershp
fee goes a long, long way in
helping handicapped and
underprivileged children in
Michigan.
About 400 people enjoyed a
fine meal, well-paced pro-
gram, good music and a very
entertaining performance by
Rita Moreno.
Tables were festive with col-
orful balloons suspended from
toy trains sold by Young
Variety Club members . . .
Barbara Moretsky, executive
director, gave a beautiful in-
vocation, and Burt Meisel,
chief barker, introduced
emcee Gene Taylor, comedian
and Dick Purtan's radio show
compadre.
Former Variety Club of
Detroit head Bruce Rosen,
now a member of the board of
trustees, took the mike and
told of daughter Julie and
son-in-law Marty Wiener giv-
ing birth to baby Samantha,
who he said for the evening
would be named "Rita
Moreno Wiener."
Excellent meal of chicken
Wellington was selected by
the Celebrity Ball chairper-
sons, who did a bang-up job
. . . Sandra Gale, Marilyn
Karbel, Rosemarie Karbel,
Rosalie Rosen, Les Lee
Roland and Harrilee Shevin.
Rita Moreno proved a real
trouper in the show biz adage
. . . She had twisted her back
three days earlier but did a
very fine song and dance
routine.
She greeted the audience
with "L'Chayim" . . . and
spoke of her 24-year marriage
to Dr. Leonard Gordon, now
also her manager and head
lighting technician . . . He
stopped practicing medicine
about nine years ago follow-
ing a heart attack . . . Her
graciousness both on and off
the stage was charming .. .
and Rita's talents are many
. . . but never drew more oohs
and ahs of disbelief as when
proudly telling her age . . . 57.
Dennis Dembs with the
handsome facial foliage .. .
Lenny Silber wearing a
striped tux shirt . . . Mindy
Sobel, daughter of localite
Shelda and the late Dr. Allen
Sobel, director of broad-
casting for Jewish Welfare
Federation of Chicago . . . pro-
ducing shows on various TV
stations . . . Circuit Court
Judge Jessica Cooper with
the sweet smile and just as
nice. personality.
Members of the Margot and
Warren Coville Supper Club
for 30 years . . . on hand to see
them honored . . . Harriett
and Ted Krass, Rhoda and Sol
Benaderet, Barbara and
Jerry Manko, Charlotte and
Iry Rosenbaum and Lorraine
and Elliot Schubiner.
Variety Club of Detroit,
Tent 5 of Variety Clubs Inter-
national, was organized in
1932 . . . with an avid dedica-
tion toward the helping of
children . . . It originally
was composed of local theater
exhibitors and movie dis-
tributors . . . Today, members
are not only from the world of
entertainment . . . but also
every walk of business life .. .
Those who knew of Variety
Club but never thought they
could belong because of no af-
filiation with the entertain-
ment world are learning
differently.
If the name Variety Club of
Detroit has been asleep .. .
media fuel for their type-
writer and airtime furnaces is
undoubtedly there for the
asking to wake up a biggie
again . . . After all, isn't help-
ing children what a lot of life
is all about?
25 OF DETROIT'S top
chefs will take part in the se-
cond annual "Taste of the Na-
tion" benefit for hungry and
homeless, April 27, at
Sheraton Oaks, Novi . . .
organized nationally by
Share Our Strength (SOS)
and sponsored by MasterCard
International.
It's expected to be the
largest nationwide tasting
event ever . . . 30,000 or more
guests attending food and
wine tastings and dinners in
60 cities across the nation . .
held at the same time .. .
"Taste of the Nation" is ex-
pected to raise $1 million for
the fight against hunger.
THE JAZZY, soulful music
that made George Gershwin
an American legend swings
into Music Hall this Sunday,
2 p.m.
"Gershwin by Request" will
include "Rhapsody in Blue,"
"Strike Up The Band," selec-
tions from "Porgy and Bess,"
Rita Moreno put on
a big show, depsite
twisting her back
three days earlier.
"My Love Is Here lb Stay"
and so much more.
JAY FREEMAN has join-
ed the staff of Radisson Plaza
Hotel at lbwn Center as its
new food and beverage direc-
tor . . . He takes over post
held by Wayne Ryan, now
food and beverage director at
Radisson Hotel in Palm
Springs, Calif.
