.-,;,

was
little
overt
anti-Semitism.
The importance of religion
impacted on the Jewish com-
munity as well. Dublin,
where most of the Jews live —
only Cork has a few families
left — was and still is Or-
thodox. When I was growing
up, every home kept kosher. I
never ate in a restuarant un-
til I went to college. Atten-
dance at services on Shabbat
was the rule, not the excep-
tion. The community catered
to every aspect of my life. I
went to a Jewish day school
and Jewish organizations like
B'nai Akiva, Jewish camps in
the summer and the Jewish
community center for other
activities. I belonged to half-
a-dozen different Jewish
organizations. In fact, I never
had a non-Jewish friend until
I went to college!
A lot has changed since the
halcyon days before I left. In
the last 20 years, Ireland has
joined the European Eco-
nomic Community (EEC)
which has modernized it to
some extent", though the
North _ ern Ireland situation
casts a terrible pall over the
land. The community, too,
hangs on for dear life.
Nonetheless, although
many of the young are leav-
ing — many to Israel — the
status of the community is
secure. The general popula-
tion takes pride in its Jewish
community. The chief rabbi is
welcomed to all state func-
tions and accorded all the
honors and privileges of a
dignitary. On the day before
Rosh Hashanah, he appears
on national television to ad-
dress the nation.
Obviously, not all Irish Jews
have the same ambivalent or
even jaundiced feelings that I
have. Those who have stayed
feel Irish to the core. And on
certain days, I am the same.
After nearly 20 years away
and even after becoming a
U.S. citizen, Dublin is still
"home." For better or for
worse, Dublin and my life
there stand as the yardstick
by which I measure my life in
the United States. Matters, it
seems, were clearer there.
Ironically, "my" Dublin —
the Dublin of my childhood —
has vanished physically. The
Jewish area of Clanbrassil
Street, which once boasted
five kosher butcher shops and
a host of other Jewish stores,
has more in common with the
ghosts of an Isaac Bashevis
Singer story than it has with
any contemporary reality. No,
my Dublin is something I
carry only within myself. ❑
