U.S., PLO Meet;
Little Progress

Washington (JTA) — The
State Department had no im-
mediate comment on the re-
cent four-hour meeting the
U.S. ambassador to Tunisia
had with Palestine Liberation
Organization representatives.
The meeting in the ancient
Tunisian city of Carthage was
the second formal session
since the United States
agreed to open a dialogue
with the PLO last December
and the first since the Bush
administration came into
office.
There was no indication in
reports from Tunisia that the
Bush administration had
made any headway in its
stated goal for the dialogue,
the advancement of the peace
process.
"The immediate objective is
to create a political environ-
ment in which productive
negotiations between Palesti-
nians and Israelis can be sus-
tained," U.S. Ambassador
Robert Pelletreau Jr. was
quoted as saying after the
meeting.
But Yassir. Abed Rabbo, a
member of the Palestine Na-
tional Council executive com-
mittee who headed the three-
member PLO delegation, said
the only way to reach a settle-
ment of the issues is through
an international conference.
Israel rejects any participa-
tion by the PLO in the peace
process and has criticized the
U.S. dialogue with the
organization.

'Prejudice' Book
In Australia

New York — "The Prejudice
Book," a classroom manual
produced by the Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith to help American
students confront and over-
come bigotry, has been
adapted for use in schools in
Australia.
David H. Strassler, chair-
man of ADL's Intergroup
Relations Committee, hailed
the B'nai B'rith Anti-
Defamation Commission of
Australia and New Zealand
for making the book available
in schools throughout New
South Wales. He said negotia-
tions are going forward to ex-
pand distribution of the
manual to the entire nation.
The introductory sections of
the Australian edition of
"The Prejudice Book"
describe the increasing ethnic
and racial diversity of what
once was a nation
predominantly British in
origin.
