To Highlight Independence Day

About Freedom Drive

Jane Sherman, chairman of
the Passage to Freedom cam-
paign for the rescue and
resettlement of Soviet Jewry,
will address Congregation
Beth Abraham Hillel Moses
at Passover services Thursday
morning.
She and Penny Blumen-
stein, who will speak at Con-
gregation B'nai Moshe ser-
vices Saturday, were in Vien-
na and Ladispoli to witness
the arrival and resettlement
of thousands of Jewish
emigres who suddenly have
been permitted to leave the
Soviet Union.
The Detroit Jewish com-
munity has embarked upon a

60-day emergency appeal to
enable Jewish relief and
resettlement organizations to
cope with the financial crisis.
A number of congregations
have takenon this Passage to
Freedom campaign as a
special project, with a con-
gregational phonathon
scheduled on May 30. In ad-
dition, Russian-speaking
members of the community
are planning to hold their
own phonathon. A mailing to
every household went out
prior to Passover.
Passage to Freedom
volunteers seek to raise $2.5
million, Detroit's share in the
$75 million national goal.

Walkers will show solidar-
ity with the Jewish communi-
ty when "We Walk as One"
Sunday, May 7, in honor of
Israel's 41st anniversary of
statehood and in support of
Jews leaving the Soviet
Union.
Young people fromHebrew
schools, day schools, organiza-
tions, Boy Scouts, clubs and
religious schools will march
under their own banners and
signs.
Among those who will be
taking part in the Jewish
Welfare Federation-sponsored
walk will be AZA and BBG
chapters. Corbin Bell, Chalut-
zim AZA, and Lori Eidelman,
Masada BBG, have been
named coordinators.
Registration for the 3.4 mile
walk will begin at 10:45 a.m.
at the Maple/Drake Jewish
Community Center. The walk
will start at 11:30. The first
1,000 persons who pre-
register will receive a free hat
that day. For information to
pre-register, call Ken Mintzer
at Federation, 965-3939.
Following the walk, ac-
tivities at the JCC will in-
clude the Great Israeli Kum-
sitz, children's craft area, pet-
ting farm, movies, quiz bowl,
entertainment and food.
The Dudaim, an Israeli
dueo, will be the featured
entertainers at the 2 p.m.
kumsitz. The program will
feature an outdoor picnic and
concert.
Juggling, bubble blowing,
Israeli dancing and singing
will be featured before the
concert.
The kumsitz is sponsored by
the Anti-Defamation League

Yom Hazikaron
Program May 8

Greenfield. The synagogue's annual kashering procedure helps
congregants prepare for Passover.

Memorial Day — will be
marked with a community-
wide ceremony 7:30 p.m.
May 8 at the Maple/Drake
Jewish Community Center.
Dr. Conrad Giles, president
of the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion of Detroit, will give the
keynote address.
The program will include
a presentation of colors
with 41 flags carried by
representatives of Jewish
organizations. Students from
Akiva, Hillel, United Hebrew
Schools and the Young Ju-
daea-Hashachar youth move-
ment will read and sing
poetry.
Chairing the event are
Monica Yaniv, Uri Segal and
Eva Kraus.

of B'nai B'rith in cooperation
with The Jewish News and
Jewish Experiences For
Families.
The picnic and concert are
free of charge. Kosher food
can be purchased on the
grounds.
At 3:30 p.m., 15 teams from
area religious schools will
compete in a Quiz based on
their knowledge of Israel. The
audience can win prizes by
identifying landmarks,
heroes and sites.
Participating schools are:

Moses, Jewish Parents In-
stitute, Temple Israel, Birm-
ingham Temple, Hillel, Tem-
ple Beth El, Temple Emanu-
El, Temple Kol Ami, Shaarey
Zedek, Adat Shalom UHS,•
Beth Achim UHS, B'nai
Israel UHS, Troy UHS and
Beth Shalom.
Lawrence Jackier will be
master of ceremonies. Rabbi
Elliot Pachter, Donald Fox
and Sharon Hart will be
Judges. Monica Yaniv is
coordinator.

Jeannie Weiner Heads
Jewish Women's League

Jeannie Weiner will be in-
stalled as president of the
League of Jewish Women's
Organizations on May 11. at
Temple Emanu-El.
Mrs. Weiner has been an ac-
tive participant in the com-
munity since her arrival from
New Mexico in 1972. She was
chairman of the Soviet Jewry
Committee of the Jewish
Community Council and
served as a co-chairman on
the Soviet Mobilization
March in Washington, D.C., in
1987.
She serves on the Jewish
Welfare Federation Board of
Governors, is vice president of
the Jewish Community Coun-
cil, is an active member of the
Michigan Board of the Anti-
Defamation League, and is
the only woman on the ex-
ecutive committee of the
American Arabic and Jewish
Friends through the Greater
Detroit Interfaith Round
Table.
Other officers to be install-
ed are: Gertrude Brainin,
