It was this reasoning, in part, that was behind the name change in 1972 from "Supper Club" to "Steak and Lobster House." Besides being the first to in- troduce smorgasbord while managing the Metropole, Mike and his Ibp Hat Supper Club were also the first in Windsor to have a brunch and have an outdoor cafe . . . And who can forget the buffets with those highly polished and intricately carved lion's heads at both ends suggesting a style of entertaining that not many restaurants took the time to provide . . . even today in this age of fast foods and franchising. You see a flavor of Mike's native Yugoslavia at the Top Hat . . . with its authentic 10th century English dining room, hand-carved wooden beams finished in the style of that period. Mike's wife, Mary, a sculptor and artist of some note in her own right, helps out at the Top Hat in whatever capacity she may be needed . . . Their son, Steve, has been master of cere- monies for the past 10 years. Over the years, the 'hp Hat has become somewhat of a family tradition for many .. . Couples who 20 years ago celebrated their own engage- ment at the Top Hat often return and proudly introduce Mike to their children who just became engaged and have come to celebrate at the Top Hat . . . The Top Hat has also always been the "in" place to go for dinner dances following school proms. Mike says that parents, who came to the Top Hat after their own high school proms, call him up to say, "My kids are coming to celebrate. Would you take care of - them?" . . . This personal con- tact with his clientele helps to explain not only Mike Drakich's own popularity, but also the Top Hat's longevity in a business which carries a track record of failure and foreclosure. The Top Hat's continued success is further augmented by the uncanny ability of its owner to pick up on new trends and directions and to adapt them to the local restaurant scene . . . The tim- ing of the transition from sup- per club to steak house is a case in point. 30th anniversary of rIbp Hat Steak & Lobster House in Windsor is a major achieve- ment in the restaurant business . . . Its reputation is one of high standard. The top hat, cane and white gloves symbolize Top Hat Supper Club and presently rIbp Hat Steak & Lobster House . . . a legend filled with international pride. GET WELL WISHES to Sid Newman of Star Deli .. . recuperating from hospital stay . . . but back working a few hours a day now. EVER HEAR of a beer tasting? . . . That's what'll be at Excalibur Restaurant this Monday, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., in the first-time venture with Merchant of Vino . . . It's call- ed "Springfest Gourmet Beer Tasting" . . . with English, Italian and Spanish cheeses, meats, French, German, American mustards, breads . . . Even pickles that go with beer in England (Branston and Piccadilly pickles), tradi- tional there with cheese, bread and beer. There'll also be just about every non-alcoholic beer available . . . and with many, you can't tell the difference . . . plus ales, pilsners and lagers. $20 admission tickets are available at Excalibur and Merchant of Vino. ORIGINAL STAGE Deli in Oak Park (Nine Mile) with new ownership, still retains the same deli menu and good food considered by many to be among the best . . . No more salt or pepper on tables in the evening . . . they're on request . . . And added to the tradi- tional Jewish-style dining are a number of low-cholesterol and low-calorie dishes . . . like stir-fry chicken cooked in its own juices : . . no butter .. . and skinned before cooking. PEGASUS Banquet and Conference Center on Monroe seats from 200 to 700, with cocktail parties accomodating up to 1,000 . . . There's a large 1,600 square foot dance floor, master sound system, pro- tected parking, etc. . . . And so the legend of Pegasus in Greektown and Pegasus at the Fisher Building con- tinues. 1=1 I ENTERTAINMENT 'Annie Get Gun' At Jewish Center Nancy Gurwin Productions and the Jewish Community Center will present Irving Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun April 29 at 9:30 p.m. The show runs through May 13.
