tion ability . . . They then
moved on to the Elmwood at
very much higher prices.
Mike came to Canada from
Yugoslavia following World
War II . . . Brother Nick had
come in 1927 and owned the
Metropole where Mike
started as a waiter and
bartender and then manager,
establishing Windsor's first
smorgasbord.
In those days, the Metropole
and Elmwood, among others,
were paying big money for
stage shows . . . Mike tried
something different at his
new Ibp Hat Supper Club . . .
He organized the Tambarit-
zans, a young troupe of
singers and dancers who drew
from much of Europe for their
routines . . . The customers
lined up at the new club, and
the Tamburitzans remained
standbys for seven years .. .
along with so many wonder-
ful entertainers.
Mike many times had op-
tions in his contracts with
entertainers . . . So when the
upcoming talent played his
place for less money . . . they

By the late '60s, however,
there were signs that as far as
supper clubs were concerned,
it was winding down . . .
Ironically enough, says Mike,
this downturn was brought
about in part by the high
salaries for those same stars
who had helped make Top
Hat such a glitter-filled
decade for supper clubs in the
first place.
"What happened, in effect,
was that our whole way of life
took a different turn," he says
. . . For one thing, rock music
came into vogue and, in
Mike's opinion, it was this
more than anything that
precipitated the demise of the
supper club.
"The old-fashioned supper
clubs that served food and
provided entertainment could
not function any longer then
for the simple reason that
rock music and fine dining do
not go together."
This decline in the
popularity of supper clubs
had other repercussions as
well . . . With a small number
of them operating, enter-
tainers were no longer in such
high demand . . . Nor was the
style of entertainment of
those who were still on the
circuit always the kind that
could draw large audiences.
"With the changing taste in
music," says Mike, "we could
no longer produce the type of
