U.S. Deports
Ex-SS Guard
New York (JTA) — Josef
Eckert, a former SS guard at
Auschwitz who lived for many
years in the Los Angeles area,
was voluntarily deported to
Austria last week.
The success of Eckert's
deportation was the fruit of a
U.S. Justice Department ef-
fort that turned into an unex-
pected tragedy for the depart-
ment's Office of Special
Investigations.
Eckert, 75, a native of
Yugoslavia, does not face
charges in Austria, the coun-
try where he requested to be
deported.
United States deportation
proceedings against Eckert
began on Dec. 21, 1987. The
Justice Department charged
that Eckert "participated in
the persecution" of Auschwitz
inmates as a member of the
notorious SS Totenkopf-
Sturmbann (Death's Head
Battalion) from 1943 to 1945.
On September 27, 1988,
Eckert admitted having con-
cealed his activities at
Auschwitz from immigration
authorities when he entered
the United States from
Austria on April 10, 1956. He
agreed to be deported without
a trial.
Eckert is believed to be the
27th Nazi war criminal to be
deported from the United
States.
Jews Criticize
Hater's Defense
Toronto (JTA) — The Cana-
dian Civil Liberties Associa-
tion is under heavy attack by
Jewish groups for assisting in
the appeal of a man convicted
for making anti-Semitic
telephone messages.
John Ross Taylor, 75, whose
record of anti-Semitic activi-
ty dates back to the 1930s,
made 40 hate phone
messages on behalf of the
Western Guard Party. He was
convicted of contempt of court
in 1984 for continuing to
make the messages after be-
ing warned 10 years earlier
that he was violating Section
13 of the Canadian Human
Rights Code,
The Canadian Supreme
Court decided that the CCLA
could intervene on his behalf.
According to its general
counsel, Alan Borovoy, Sec-
tion 13, is "so broad and
vague" as to be dangerous.
But Manuel Prutschi, na-
tional community relations
director of the Canadian
Jewish Congress, accused the
CCLA of endorsing "wanton
slandering" of Jews.
