Dead At 90
•
New York 30 (JTA) — Jehiel
Elyachar, a philanthropist
and real estate developer who
served as a major benefactor
of higher education in the
United States and Israel, died
last week of a heart attack in
Manhattan. He was 90 years
old.
An engineer by training,
Elyachar served as founder 114
and president of the
American Society for
Technion-Israel Institute of
Technology, fund-raising
organization for the Haifa-
based university.
He also led the effort to
create a chair of Sephardic
studies at Yeshiva University.
His family's collection of
Ladino and Sephardic
literature, the largest of its
kind in the Western
Hemisphere, is housed at
A
Yeshiva's library.
In addition, he established
the Sephardic Home for the
Aged in Brooklyn.
Elyachar was born in
Jerusalem of a family that
traced its roots in Israel back
five centuries to the Jews' ex
pulsion from Spain in 1492.
His great-grandfather was
Rabbi Yaakov Shaul
Elyachar, Sephardic Chief
Rabbi of Israel from 1893 to
1906.
As a soldier in the U.S. Ar-
my in World War II, he rapid-
A
ly advanced from private to
colonel in charge of military
intelligence for Gen. Dwight
Eisenhower.
Elyachar made his fortune
in real estate after arriving in
the United States in 1928. He

founded the Straight Con-
struction Corporation in New
York, eventually ac-
cumulating properties worth
over $100 million.

Anne Pollard
Transfer Denied
New York (JTA) — A U.S.
district court judge last week
rejected a request by Anne
Henderson Pollard to be
transferred from a Minnesota
prison facility to an institu-
tion where she could receive
better medical treatment.
Judge Harry MacLaughlin
of the Fourth U.S. District
Court in Minneapolis approv-
ed the medical treatment she
has been receiving as an in-
mate in the Federal Medical
Center prison facility in
Rochester, Minn.
He also upheld last month's
decision by a prison court
magistrate imposing a
24-hour medical watch on
Pollard, whose husband,
