"We did move every year when there was a play to do, and I was always taken out of school early" New plays meant a big production for Rosenfeld. "I was always the new little girl at school," she says. But there is no bitterness, far from it. The daughter of actors Joseph Schoengold and Frances Adler was schooled in the elegance of polite rejoinders. More than anything, she was educated in the need for education. "I remember my grandfather's bookshelves, lined and lined with so many works. It was wonderful." So was the reading. By the age of 6, Rosenfeld was lulled into a blissful world reading Gorki. "When my parents moved the family to Philadelphia — I was very young — I remember them reading Dickens to us," she recalls. "I was reading Ber- nard Shaw when I was 7; Hugo at 11. Literature has always meant so much to me." As has writing. "I've been a writer since I was '7," says Rosenfeld. At 64, she con- tinues to pursue the muse. Through the years, her byline has appeared on numerous articles in the Saturday Review of Literature. She also wrote the scripts for such radio shows as "Hollywood Showcase," "Silver Theatre" and "Theatre Guild of the Air" as well as for television's "I Spy" and "Modern Romances." She has had a romance with the stage for years, appearing in "Claudia," "A Streetcar Named Desire," and "Enemy of the People," opposite Fredric March and Florence Eldridge. This followed years of service to the Yiddish Art Theatre, where she had started out by taking the leading role from an actress who had become ill. Her first co-star? Maurice Schwartz. She would star many times again with Schwartz when becoming a member of the Group Theater. Rosenfeld is a group unto herself. In addition to these accomplishments and writing for the movies, she authored "The Yiddish Theatre and Jacob P. Adler (originally Bright Star of Exile: Jacob Adler and the Yiddish Theatre)," a marvelous amalgam of tales from the old school and old theater.
