When else have we paid so much money for so lit- tle food? On most other nights, the children wear blue jeans and unlaced sneakers. Tonight they're wearing real shoes; they've tied them and their clothes aren't faded and torn. And when, oh when, have the adults ever been quite so exhausted from cleaning and carrying and changing and shopping and cooking? Our ancestors were slaves in Egypt, and on Passover, gathering with family and friends, all clean and ex- hausted and yet exhilarated, we retell the story of their ex- odus and give thanks for our freedom. Despite the luxuries of suburbia, the conveniences of 1989 and the tendency toward assimilation, tonight is different, and in the frenzy of our preparations, our devo- tion to traditions and enac- ting the ancient ritual of the Passover seder, we become humble and thankful and mindful of who we are and from where we have come. In the process, we create for our children colorful legacy, one which will conjure up wonderful memories and repetitions of our customs in the future days, when they become the heads of chaotic households, frantically and fastidiously preparing for Passover. ❑ I LOCAL NEWS m C z 111 m to -4 GCS s TO CHOOSE FROM I TRACKER * METRO * SPECTRUM * PR1ZM IN STOCK and READY TO GO!! As a result, the Jewish Community Council suggests that Jewish members do not attend the show, produced in Southfield. And The Jewish News pulled an advertise- ment for this week's publica- tion that requested a Jewish audience for Thursday, the day it airs on Channel 7. "We are not saying, 'Hey, wasn't (Hitler) a great guy," said Kelly and Co. producer Brad Hurtado. "It is a retrospective of what happen- ed to the Jewish people." Kelly and Co., WXYZ's morning talk show, will host a former Hitler youth com- mander and a Holocaust sur- vivor on Thursday. Alfons Heck, who wrote two books about his role in com- manding over 3,000 Hitler youths at age 16, will speak with Auschwitz survivor Helen Waterford, who also wrote a book. The duo, each from San Diego, has appeared on talk shows throughout the United States. "It is inappropriate to solicit the Jewish community on the first day of Passover for a program tied to the 100th anniversary of the birthday of Hitler," Jewish News Associate Publisher Arthur Horwitz said _ . "It is in poor taste." Richard Lobenthal, j Midwest regional director for the Anti-Defamation League, added he wasn't surprised that Kelly and Co. would air such a program on a Jewish holiday. He said the show's producers show bias against Jews. Jewish Community Council Executive Director David Gad-Harf said Heck and Waterford offer good insight, but added the timing of the show is poor. "It is bringing attention to Adolf Hilter during Passover -- a totally inappropriate time," Gad-Harf said. "We are not encouraging people to go." ❑ School Vote On Shavuot Conflict The Southfield Board of Education will decide Tues- day whether to change the Southfield High School graduating ceremonies from June 8 to June 7. The Tuesday evening vote at Eisenhower School is the result of a protest by some Jewish residents, led by Rab- bi David A. Nelson of Con- gregation Beth Shalom and his family, that June 8 is Erev Shavuot and will prevent par- ticipation by Jewish students and their families. Rabbi Nelson's daughter, Reva, and the family's foreign exchange student, Inbar Meytsar of Milan, Italy, would be affected. Oak Park High School's graduation is scheduled for June 8 at Ford Auditorium.
