name — made me sound like
a country/western singer — so
I called my brother, Rodman
Jay and asked him if he mind-
ed if I took his middle name."
She also recalled that "I
had my first paying job,
Louisa in The Fantastics at
Mr. Mac's Stable in Dear-
born."
After Oliver she moved to
New York and since then has
spent her time on both coasts.
She remembers working "as
a waitress in a
restaurant/theater where I'd
collect my tips, turn around
and give 10 percent to the bus
boy, then turn around again
and start singing Tradition.
The play was Fiddler on the
Roof and I was in costume
while I waited tables.
"I've delivered singing
telegrams — really embar-
rassing when you have to do
it in an office — and
demonstrated toys at FAO
Schwarz (in New York City).
But I was always able to pay
my rent and buy food."
Myers recalled some career
highlights to date.
"There are so many, in so
many different ways.
"Commercials are one,
because my parents and
brother see them. In one for
Long John Silver's I played a
grubby counter-girl in a
`creepy' hamburger place who
was rude to customers and
goofed up their orders. Then
I actually mauled a man who
had a tiger on his jacket in a
commercial for Le Tigre
sportswear.
"For two years I was a 'nice
Jewish nun' in Nunsense in
six different companies. I did
it off-Broadway and it was a
similar situation to the 'play
within the play' of Boy
Friend. The off-Broadway
lead had throat trouble, I had
just performed the role (Sister
Mary Amnesia) in Cleveland
and they asked to fly into
New York and take over.
"My parents were planning
a trip to New York, so it all
worked out. I played off-
Broadway off and on for a
month."
The role in Bay Friend also
marked a milestone.
"The first time I ever turn-
ed down a role," she explain-
ed. "It was a touring musical,
which pays more than
regional theater like Studio
Arena.
"But it was a part I'd played
before and my manager,
Judith Leverone of Artists
Management Inc., agreed
with me that it wasn't a good
move career-wise. And then
the lead in Boy Friend came
up.
"I didn't think I'd get to the
point of turning down jobs
this early in my career." ❑
