FRIDAY, APRIL 7, 1989

challenging. What's reward.
ing for me is that I know I can
meet those challenges!'
Working for a woman is dif-
ferent from working for a
man, Madon said. "I find that
working for Florine is much
more gratifying because she
really expects the best of me.
It's not a surprise to her that
I do well."
Mark is often asked to
speak at community benefits.
"When she's involved in
speaking engagements, I help
her write the speeches and
provide her with materials to
go with them," Madon said. "I
get inside her shoes!'
Madon's 8-6 schedule is fill-
ed with unusual events ."The
most unique situation that
occurred here in our main of-
fice in Farmington Hills hap-
pened right after we moved
into it in 1987," Madon said.
"Martha Stewart, the cooking
spokesperson for Kmart,
wanted a test kitchen to film
her commercials. We had a
new facility here and a new
test kitchen. Kmart filmed
the commercial here!' Madon
helped organize the spur-of-
the-moment event.
Another impromptu event
was a tea party Mark co-
hosted for Kitty Dukakis
when she was in town cam-
paigning for her husband,
former presidential candidate
Michael Dukakis. "I put
together the invitation list,
sent out the invitations, set
up the tea and worked with
Kitty Dukakis' staff," Madon
said.
When Mark commits
herself to a board or commit-
tee, Madon, too, is committed.
"When she hosts parties and
is a member of any board or
committee, she is very active,"
Madon said. "And when she's
active, that means I'm active.
If it means soliciting people to
benefit the Detroit Symphony
or Orchestra Hall, then I'm as
involved in it as she.
"I just keep her moving in
addition to all of her other
business activities, which in-
clude interviews, television
and radio spots plus enter-
taining business associates
who come to town. I make
sure that she's at the right
place at the right time. Her
itinerary changes moment to
moment. If you asked me
what date it was, I wouldn't
hesitate to tell you the day,
but I would hesitate to tell
you the month because right
now I'm already working in-
to June!"
Mark said she likes the fact
that Madon knows when to
schedule her appointments.
"Sheri is a take-charge kind
of person," Mark said. "She's
very perceptive, and she's not
afraid to make decisions

without asking me, which is
very important because I'm
on the road a lot!'
Not a letter addressed to
Weight Watchers or Mark is
left unopened. Mark receives
volumes of mail from people
expressing their desire to join
Weight Watchers or gratitude
for having found the
organization.
"lb keep Florine from being
buried, I respond to what I
can," Madon said. "Then,

"When she's
active, I'm active.
If it means
soliciting people to
benefit the Detroit
Symphony or
Orchestra Hall, I'm
involved."

Florine and I look at the
other letters, and she answers
everything — even thank-you
notes — because she ap-
preciates the fact that these
people take the time to ex-
press their concern!'
Taking dictation from Mark
is another aspect of Madon's
job that does not present a
problem — even when it's
done by car or plane. "Florine
is on the road a lot, so it's not
unusual for her to call me
from her car and ask me to
take a letter," Madon said.
"She flies frequently
throughout the country, and
she'll even call from the plane
. We're constantly in touch!"
Whenever Mark calls her
office, Madon is there. "My
hours are her hours, and I
never take a lunch;' Madon
said. "When she calls, she
doesn't have to be concerned
about leaving a message with
someone else!'
A typical work day begins
at 8 a.m. "From the moment
I arrive, she's on the phone
calling me from home while
she's on her treadmill,"
Madon said. "I just put the
speaker phone on, and we'll
get to work!'
Radio and television tap-
ings make up many of Mark's
mornings. Every Monday, she
tapes "15 Minutes of Health
and Fitness with Florine
Mark" on WWJ.
When Mark does cooking
demonstrations, she and
Madon work with in-house
food advisers on what to
prepare. Madon recalled an
embarrassing situation that
occurred last Thanksgiving.
"Florine was on a live televi-
sion program preparing a
turkey, and the food advisers
didn't include a Thflon, stick-
free pan," she said. "So, the
turkey stuck to the pan. She
got out of it, though, with her
sense of humor!'
