Rabbi Mark Cohn too . . . He led a mission of the students on a subsidized tour (the Jerusalem Experience) . . . and agreed to have each one carry six baseballs in his lug- gage . . . The plot thickened when they were delivered by members of the Israel Association of Baseball, the Detroit Committee of IAB co- chaired by culprit David Dombey. Actually, the cooperative ef- forts of four local groups have helped the Jerusalem Little League Baseball program start its third season . . . On a mission to Israel, led by Paul D. Borman and under sponsorship of Detroit Jewish Community Council, Allan Gale was approached by former Detroiter Sheldon Klinest, with an urgent re- quest for their expanding Lit- tle League program . . . It began with 160 youngsters making up 10 teams . . . and now, three years later, 600 kids round out 35 squads .. . Even one near an Arab village is made up of Arabic and Jewish youngsters show- ing the world how to get along together. On his return, the Council's Allan called Dave . . . A meeting was arranged with Seymour Brode, president of the Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, where Bob Sternberg, Dave's co- chairman, made the need known . . . Seymour contacted Bill Hertz, who picked up a case of 10 dozen balls which the MJSHF donated to the IAB. After the high school youngsters delivered the baseballs they had "smug- gled," a fax was sent by Allan to Sheldon telling him where he could pick up the donation from Detroit's Jewish community. The effort coincides with the drive that the IAB is con- ducting with the Jewish Com- munity Center in collecting used baseball equipment to help the internationally- recognized Little League pro- gram where 600 Israelis and youth from a host of cultural and religious backgrounds are learning to play the great American pasttime together. For more info, call Dave Dombey, 355-2266 . . . No, the didn't have baseballs diamonds sewn in them .. . just a lot of real good diamond-playing fun. CONGRATS ... to Celia and Alex Goldberg . . . on their 60th anniversary . . . They love children . . . their own five, 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and the 40 youngsters they fostered for 30 years. AS LONG AS I can remember, Leonard Baruch has been active in Jewish community goings-on . . . Even way back as president of the Jewish Young Adult Council and chairman of the Junior Division of Allied Jewish Campaign . . . Leonard's name has always been among the first when volunteers were needed .. . Now the former director of Camp Petosega and youth director at Congregation Shaarey Zedek will be right- ly honored during services and luncheon, April 8, by its Men's Club of which he is a past president, besides Shaarey Zedek trustee . . . A lot of folks know Leonard and will want to see him honored . . . Call Congregation Shaarey Zedek, 357-5544. CONGRATS ... to Louis Bernstein . . . on his 80th birthday . . . also to Louis and wife Belle . . . on their 59th anniversary the day before. DANIEL OKRENT, son of localites Gizzy and Harry Okrent, welcomes in the baseball season with a new book, Baseball Anecdotes (Ox- ford University Press) . . . He's editor of New England Monthly magazine in western Massachusetts, and co- authored the book with Steve Wulf of Sports Illustrated .. . It is available on area book shelves. BEST BET Of The Weekend . . . Variety Club of Detroit's Celebrity Ball .. . this Sunday . . . at Westin Hotel. JANET STROTE, nursery school teacher at Echo Park School on Wing Lake Road, tells of 4-year-old Emily Korotkin, daughter of Julie and Ken Korotkin, during a unit on presidents . . . Janet held up a picture of George Washington and asked the 4-year-olds if anyone knew who it was . . . All the children sat quietly except Emily, who eagerly raised her hand and excitedly blurted out, "This is a picture of George Washington and he was our first rabbi!" ❑
