Speaking to members of the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce of Michigan in Novi during its first Israel Technology and Product Com- mercialization Conference, Levy said Michigan is set up and systematically to accom- modate a myriad of joint business ventures with Israel. Levy and State Commerce Director Doug Ross each noted the state's strengths — its manufacturing capability from the automotive industry, biotechnology companies and agriculture. State, American- Israel Chamber of Commerce and Israel business leaders hope to target Michigan's large corporations to en- courage participation. Among them will be the several food and pharmaceutical com- panies headquartered in Michigan. "We have to move toward a free market," said Yoram Gabbay, Israel economic con- sul for the Midwest. "Our future is basically in the United States. We need to deal with American businessmen." To date, five Israeli com- panies — military supplier Urdan Industries, robotics supplier Robomatix Ltd., soft- ware designer Tecnomatix, machine maker Computeriz- ed Machine Tools and com- puter system company In- Thchnologies — operate offices in northwest Detroit. Gelman Sciences of Ann Arbor is the only Michigan company that runs a research and develop- ment facility in Israel. Ross named Debra Schneider, Commerce Depart- ment manager of interna- tional joint ventures, as the "Our future is basically in the United States. We need to deal with American businessman." Yoram Gabbay state's professional business matchmaker for Israel. Schneider recently returned from a trip to Israel, where she met with government and business leaders. "We developed specific vi- sions and strategies to become a center for North America for manufacturing," Ross said. "We want to create a technology pipeline. We want to be a world leader." During the day-long con- ference, Michigan businessmen met with representatives from Israeli companies and the Israel Ex- port Institute. "In the field of hi-tech, we are welcome here more than in places like the Silicon Valley," said Rafi Glick, the export institute's industrial division director, who came to Detroit for the first time for the conference.
