The farmhouse was renovated and used for meetings, services and congregational offices. One year later, Cantor Henry Blank came to the Livonia Jewish Congregation. The congregation found a new home in 1964, when it purchased a church on Six Mile Road in Livonia and renovated it into a synagogue. The facility, which seated 400 persons, included a sanctuary, social hall, kitchen, offices and classrooms. Martin Gordon was named rabbi of the synagogue in 1967. Among his respon- sibilities are visiting Jewish prisoners, serving as chaplain of the Livonia Police Depart- ment and working as chaplain at Northville State Mental Hospital. In 1971, the Livonia Jewish Congregation moved into its current facility on Seven Mile Road. Helen Bayles was named president of the congregation in 1978. She is one of only 50 women who served as presi- dent of a Conservative synagogue. That same year, Cantor Blank retired from full-time duties. Eighty-nine years old when he retired, he served for 70 years as a cantor.
