Mixed Couples'
Parents Meet

Temple Beth El, in coopera-
tion with the Union of
American Hebrew Congrega-
tions, Northeast Lakes Coun-
cil, will hold a series of classes
for parents of intermarried
children at 9:30 a.m. April 9,
16 and 30 at Beth El.
Participants will have an
opportunity to discuss their
child's interfaith relationship
and develop responses to
various family dilemmas. The
group will be led by Nancy
Gad-Harf, UAHC regional
outreach coordinator.

Rabbi Kaganoff

Marty Pasternak

born son of survivor Zoltan
Klein. Growing up in a com-
munity of survivors in
Borough Park in Brooklyn,
Yossi Klein struggles with
the burden of his father's
legacy.
Zoltan Klein was the only
member of his family to sur-
vive the Nazi destruction of
Hungary.
Kaddish was made by tap-
ing snatches of his life, in-
cluding his death in Israel,
over a period of five years.
A second film night will be
held May 11, when The
Policeman, and award-
winning Israeli comedy will
be shown with the short,
Gefilte Fish.
The community is invited.
All films will be shown at
Shaarey Zedek. There is no
admission charge.

Temple Israel
Plans Events

The adult education com-
mittee of Temple Israel will
hold a Shabbat getaway
weekend today through Sun-
day at the Butzel Center. The
weekend will consist of
Midrash, music and merri-

will meet for a night of fun,

Congregation B'nai Israel
of West Bloomfield will host
Rabbi Benzion Kaganoff as
scholar-in-residence today
through Sunday. Rabbi
Kaganoff, an authority on the
history and origin of Jewish
names, is the guest of the first
annual Frances Avadenka
memorial weekend.
Rabbi Kaganoff will speak
on "From Pharoah's House to
Maxwell House" during ser-
vices today. He also will speak
Saturday and, at 10:45 a.m.
Sunday, he will discuss "Your
Jewish Name Is the Key to
Your Jewish Identity." A buf-
fet breakfast at 10:15 a.m.
will precede the talk.
The community is invited.

Young Israel
Chessed Award

Young Israel of Southfield
will honor Morris and Helen
Weiss at its 11th annual ban-
quet May 7 at the Jewish
Community Center.
The owners of Zeman's
kosher bakeries, Morris and
Helen Weiss were born in
Czechbslovakia. They were
liberated in 1945 from Nazi
death camps and lived in
Zatec, Czechoslovakia, until
they emigrated. They arrived
in Detroit in 1949 when Mor-
ris Weiss began appren-
ticeship as a baker. In three
years, he purchased his own
bakery. Sixteen years ago, he
bought Zeman's.
