loin Us For A Pleasant Surprise and Discover That THERE IS A DIFFERENCE! dining room, carry-out and trays ( g4 Efl portrayed in the Allen segment. One cannot help but speculate about what messages Allen is managing to convey to us as American Jews and to the society as a whole. On one hand, Mother is offering warnings to American Jews about chang- ing their names and consider- ing intermarriage. She is the keeper of the ethnic faith and messenger against assimila- tion. But she does her pro- selyting in such an overbear- ing manner that her ap- proach outweighs her message. One cannot help but view her good intentions in a negative comical way. If one looks at recent films and the image of the Jewish women in them, one is left with the same one dimen- sional character — the screaming and/or domineer- ing pestering woman who drives her offspring crazy. In Crossing Delancey the match- maker is loud and obnoxious; even adorable bubeleh is in- terfering as she decides to marry off her granddaughter. In Beaches, Lainie Kazan plays a pushy and loud stage mother. In Torch Song Trilogy the Anne Brancroft character is always yelling at her son for being gay and making her suffer. One cannot blame just Jewish men for perpetuating the stereotype since the scripts for Crossing Delancey and Beaches were both writ- ten by women. The big problem with this continual stream of Jewish mother screen caricatures is that American Jewish women are being forced into an im- age rut. What is a Jewish woman to do? If we buy into our celluloid role in life all we have to look forward to is be- ing obnoxious, controlling mothers once we settle down and have children. No wonder the Amy Irving character in Delancey was reluctant to date the pickle man. She was probably worried she would wind up as a shrill prune. And why would Jewish men want to date and marry a Jewish woman if she will only develop into this horror? Worst of all this stereotype is continually being used in the society as a basis for anti- Semitic jokes and ethnic labeling. Other minority groups have protested and tried to change their negative images on the screen. It appears that the traditional depiction of Afro- Americans are progressing better than Jews. The Bill Cosby Show has been hailed as presenting a more positive image about Afro-Americans.
