W
hen people inquire
about favorite res-
taurants, the
answers many times include
those among the tops with
records of traditions in
consistency.
There is something about a
restaurant which has been
around . . . and weathered
many storms . . . They are
the tried and true breed
that can be counted upon
because of their ever-present
consistency.
One of these is Mario's on
Second Boulevard between
Willis and Canfield . . . easi-
ly recognizable from the out-
side by its elegant Italian
tudor structure.
The
serenity
and
cleanliness of Mario's is still
there . . . a favorite of people
from all walks of life . . .
especially show biz stars per-
forming in the area at the Fox
Theatre, Masonic Temple or
Fisher Theatre . . . Many also
appearing in the downtown
Detroit and Windsor areas
have heard about Mario's, and
make the visit there after
high recommendation from
others in the world of show
business.
Mario's seats about 400 or
500 in three rooms now each
with its own decor but con-
taining romantic elegance .. .
All have fireplaces and
original oil paintings on the
walls.
A big plus for Mario's is its
price structure . . . Northern
Italian dinners can be gotten
for as low as $12.50 . . . and
when I say dinner, I mean a
complete dinner, not a la
carte.
There's total relaxation at
this traditional restaurant
that continues to improve
with age . . . while a world's
recordholder pianist (134
straight hours for charity)
plays background music .. .
Our waitperson, Nabil Ali, an
18-year veteran at Mario's
brought us the fresh bread
baked in Mario's own ovens,
its tasty minestrone soup,
very appetizing anti-pasto,
spaghetti with home-made
clam sauce and a beautiful
and tasty piece of Dover sole
. . . This was complete
pleasantness with a meal
hard to beat . . . as the woman
pianist played a medley from
Gershwin's "Rhapsody In
Blue" among other fine
nostalgic tunes.
About Nabil Ali, so very ef-
ficient and personable . . .
back in 1984 he had gone for
.a visit to Lebanon to visit his
family-. . . The Beirut airport
was closed then and he had no
way of getting out . . . Nabil
didn't want to go to Syria and
the only way was through
Israel . . . His dad luckily
knew some Israeli com-
manders who got Nabil's
brother back to school in
France and himself to the
United States via El Al .. .
and to a highly grateful
Frank Passalacqua, owner of
Mario's.
The Main Dining Room,
where we dined, has the look
of an English pub . . . soft
lighting, mauve-colored ceil-
ing, mahagony walls, burgun-
dy floral Old English wall
coverings, white tablecloths
Out-of-town stars
and in-town
clientele keep
returning to
Mario's.
and napkins, burgundy
chairs.
The Crystal Room is mir-
rored with gray walls and
ceiling, black leather seats,
etc.
The Florentine Room as a
beige color look with lighter
beige panels, beige chairs, etc.
Strange that Mario's was
skipped by a local food writer
when mention was made of
places to dine before and after
the Fox Theatre . . . If per-
chance personal feelings were
imminent, they should never
have been allowed to be a fac-
tor . . . I don't know if this is
so, but there still are some
who cannot conceive anybody
but Mario Lelli operating the
place . which is pure
ridiculous.
Mario's is a father-and-son
operation . . . and a good one,
too ... as Frank and 22-year-
old Vince Passalcqua make
certain that the tradition is
maintained with fond and fer-
vent consistencey.
Proud pappy Frank walked
from table to table showing
off his and wife Claudia's
2-month-old baby, Vitina,
who like Mom is also
registered as a model.
The clean, well-organized
kitchen with oodles of
stainless steel, own butcher
and so many fine features, are
Mario's standouts.
There's entertainment also
at lunchtime Monday
through Friday .. . and seven
days a week evenings.
A high mark of a restau-
