0- Italian Scientists
*, Make Appeal

Rome (JTA) — Over 300
Italian university professors
have signed an appeal on
behalf of imprisoned Israeli
nuclear technician Mordechai
Vanunu.
The Rome daily Il Messag-
gero said the appeal, also
signed by about 400 resear-
chers, was similar to one sign-
ed earlier by 27 scientists in
_various countries.
It asks the Israeli
authorities to "recognize that
Mordechai Vanunu is a man
of conscience, thrown into a
profound crisis by his role in
a military program."
Vanunu was convicted by
an Israeli court last March of
espionage and treason for
leaking secrets about Israel's
nuclear program. He was
sentenced to 18 years in
prison, though his crimes car-
ried a maximum penalty of
life imprisonment.

Israeli System
Gets U.S. Test

Anat Maor

Pink Pink, White Cobalt,. Champagne, Magnolia, Silver, Scarlet, Berry, Black

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The U.S.
Marine Corps is testing a new
Israeli-designed and produced
televised gunsight monitor-
ing system.
Emmanuel Gil, president of
Elbit, an Israeli defense com-
pany said the new Sniper-C3
(command, control and corn-
munications) system, which
costs $100,000 per unit, is the
first of its kind in the world.
The device consists of a
small black box fixed atop an
Elbit sniper's gunsight,
which transfers the image by
cable to a nearby display
transmitter, enabling the
sharpshooter's assistant to
see exactly what the sniper
himself sees.
It also transmits the image,
complete with cross-hairs, to
a commander some distance
away, who can thus monitor
and coordinate the aim of five
independent sharpshooters.
Fitted to tank guns, the
device enables the tank com-
mander to see through his
gunner's sights and allow a
unit commander to monitor a
number of his tanks.
An unnamed European
country is said to be testing
the helmet, and the United
States has said such a product
would answer its needs.
