all too common in our socie-
ty. We see these attitudes at
work with regard to our
elders who are frail and in
poor health, and even more
clearly with seniors in good
physical and mental health
who wish to remain active
and productive.
The emphasis on youth and
the denigration of age have
even had serious negative ef-
fects on many of the middle-
aged. While legal steps have
been taken to protect people
from arbitrary treatment
because of age, age
discrimination is still very
much with us. This form of
discrimination expresses
itself in the actions of firms
that pressure devoted
employees to take early
retirement to shortchange
them financially. We forget
that if we live long enough,
we also will become elderly.
On a number of occasions, I
have met young corporate ex-
ecutives who ardently defend
the concept of mandatory
retirement, being convinced
that by getting rid of the old-
timers the corporation would
make it possible for them to
rise to the top more quickly.
To regard our elders as
disposable is the major step
toward barbarism. Let us
hope we will gradually

reverse this trend and regain
a sense of respect for the old
which is one of the chief signs
of a civilized and humane
society.
A third possible answer to
the puzzle presented in the
lbrah portion of this week is
that of Rabbi Eliezer, who
said, "The sons of Aaron died
only because they decided a
law in the presence of Moses
their teacher."
They were guilty of
disrespect toward their
teacher. While the student of
lbrah was not only allowed to
ask questions, but even en-
couraged to do so, it was to be
done with respect. The stu-
dent was free to question the
teacher's ideas and premises,
but not to disregard him.
By deciding a law in Moses'
presence Nadiv and Avihu
sought to push him aside and
cause people to lose respect
for Moses' leadership. They
were guilty of one of the most
serious transgressions includ-
ed in the confession of sins on
the Day of Atonement, the sin
of despising parents and
teachers.
Even though we, as in-
dividuals, may be free of this
shortcoming, the fact that
some of our fellow Jews are
guilty of it should cause us
concern. A widespread at-
titude of scorn toward our
teachers can only help shat-
ter those bonds that have
kept our people together for
more than 30 centuries. Just
as we should strive to en-
courage respect for our elders,
so should we also strive to in-
still repsect for our teachers.
lb the degree that we can suc-
ceed in these efforts, we will
become a more civilized socie-
ty. 0

our fellow Jews who suffer
from drug or alcohol addic-
tion, or both. Serious efforts
are being made to come to
grips with this problem, and
to do so from a Jewish
perspective.
Another possible answer to
the riddle of Nadav and Avihu
is suggested by the Talmud.
We are told, "Once when
Moses and Aaron walked, and
were followed by Nadav and
Avihu, who were followed by
all Israel, Nadav said to
Avihu: When will the two old
men die, and you and I will be
the leaders of Israel?" This
passage gives us a strong in-
dication that their lack of
respect for Moses and Aaron,
combined with excessive am-
bition, led to the end of Nadav
and Avihu.
Lack of respect and con-
sideration for the elderly is
