I NEWS I APRIL MICHIGAN GLASS MONTH WWII Heroine Is Honored Paris (JTA) — The Jewish woman who created a safe house for Jewish children at Izieu, France, has received the Legion of Honor decora- tion from President Francois Mitterrand. Sabina Zlatin, a Polish Jew who found refuge in France just before World War II, is the only survivor of Izieu, whose 44 children were even- tually sent to Auschwitz by Lyon Gestapo officer Klaus Barbie. Zlatin, now 82, created the home at Izieu where she hid Jewish children when the Nazis occupied France. On April 6, 1944, Barbie ordered German soldiers to arrest all of the- children, who were be- tween the ages of 5 and 17. IDF Runs $330 Million Defecit Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Israel , Defense Force has ac- cumulated a deficit of 580 million shekels — nearly $330 million — as a result of expenses related to controll- ing the Palestinian uprising in the administered ter- ritories, according to the Israeli daily Ha'aretz. Quoting senior military sources, the paper reports that a considerable percen- tage of the funds earmakred for developing alternatives to the costly Lavi fighter plane are being used to cover day-to- day expenses. The IDF will discuss the budgetary problems in a long- range plan to be presented in the next several weeks to Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin, the paper said. Italy Recalls Nazi Massacre Rome (JTA) — The chief rab- bi of Rome and a Catholic prelate shared the duties of celebrants at an ecumenical memorial service com- memorating the 45th an- niversary of a massacre in which 325 Romans, most of them Jews or resistance fighters, were killed in reprisal for the partisan at- tack on a Nazi military police patrol. Italian Defense Minister Valero Zanone took part in what has now become an an- nual ceremony recalling the deaths at the Fosse Ardeatine, or Ardeatine Pits. A representative of President Francesco Cossiga laid a wreath.
