lems of society."
Although he says that he
did not encounter much anti-
Semitism during his rise to
the top of the theater world,
Gelman notes, "In recent
years there have been rumbl-
ings from some quarters
that the Russian national
theater is dominated by
Jews. It is unpleasant but
undeniable that the current
explosion of popular anti-
Semitism has come about in
an era of greater freedom."
Yet Gelman believes that
conditions for Jews will con-
tinue to improve if Gorba-
chev's reform program can
be sustained. "The Jewish
question is only one of many
issues which will be affected
by the success or failure of
perestroika. That is why
people like myself must put
aside what we enj oy doing
most, and involve ourselves
in political activity. Can per-
estroika survive? It must
survive."

Even many of the most
assimilated Jews were swept
up by the excitement of the
February concert by Israeli
stars Yaffa Yarkoni and
Dudu Fisher in Moscow's
Tchaikovsky Hall — the
first ever by Israeli per-
formers in the Soviet capital.
Tickets were all but im-
possible to secure, with
scalpers reportedly com-
manding as much as 300
rubles (two months salary
for the average Soviet) per
seat. The sidewalk in front of
the ornate hall before the
concert was filled with
thousands of people looking
for tickets.
Inside the lobby, the
crowd appeared almost
giddy with anticipation. "I
flew here from my home in
Odessa because this is the
first opportunity I have had
to hear Israeli singers," said
Valery, a middle aged engi-
neer. Valery, who has no
present plans to leave the
Soviet Union, said he found
it "deeply gratifying" that
some outlet for Jewish ex-
pression was at last being
allowed.
Yarkoni rose to the occa-
sion with what Israeli
observers agreed was one of
her best concerts in many
years. The songs were mov-
ingly rendered standards
like Ba'shanah Ha'ba'ah, Ha
Finjan, Erev Shel Shoshanim
and more recent pop classics
like Hallelujah. When Yarkoni
sang Naomi Shemer's 1967
anthem Yerushaliyim Shel
Zahav, ("Jerusalem Of Gold"),
the audience reached the
threshold of tears and
beyond. The melody seemed
