tells weekly "how much the
Jewish community in Detroit
is striving to get these people
. . . to be allowed to come here.
"However, once they get
here and are sent to Sinai .. .
it's impossible for me to get
people who speak Yiddish, or
more importantly now, who
have a smattering of Russian,
to meet them at the hospital
and interpret for them during
the time they see the doctor.
"They (volunteer inter-
preters) can just come and go
— they do not have to do
anything else. They just have
to ask the questions the doc-
tor wants answered. I'm sure
there are many people in the
Detroit area who can help,"
said Mrs. Nosanchuk. She
added appointments usually
aren't later than 2 p.m.
Because of the volunteer
shortage, Mrs. Nosanchuk,
who said she has had little
luck appealing to Jewish
organizations and
synagogues, is shouldering a
lot of the burden. "I'm in my
70s," she said. "I'm going
there (to Sinai) almost every
single day and I'm ex-
hausted." This past week, she
had 14 appointments, she
said.
Mrs. Nosanchuk can be
reached at 851-6474.
