negative material about
Jewish women is usually
written and directed by Jews.
The Jewish community
should be demanding some
serious script revisions. We
should also be analyzing why
the self-portraits of our
women are so negative at this
stage of our existence in
America. If we cannot push
for fresh new portraits of
ourselves, then we do not
enrich outselves or mature as
a community.
The other two works in New
York Stories are Life Lessons
directed by Martin Scorese
and Life Without Zoe directed
by Francis Ford Coppola. Of
the three, Scorese's piece is
the winning work. It depicts
a famous artist's life and
precarious relationship with
a young, female protege. Nick
Nolte as the artist displays
the passion and egotism of a
driven artist. The camera
work by Nestor Almendros is
a pleasure to watch. Coppola's
film shows the lives of a group
of New York rich kids, but the
story never really goes
anywhere. ❑
