Maine Chance, Phoenix, Ariz.
(602-947-6365), considers itself
among the oldest spas since it
opened its doors 42 years ago as a
retreat for women only. The 110-acre
spa is closed in the summer. The six-
day program concentrates primarily
on beauty care and pampering,
along with some fitness disciplines
thrown in for good measure. The
mixture works well for Maine
Chance, and 82 percent of its guests
return.
La Costa Hotel and Spa,
Carlsbad, Calif. (619-438-9111), is
altering its image and broadening its
appeal after catering only to the rich
and famous. The hotel now has
seasonal rates, and the La Costa
Salon, formerly the Beauty Institute,
is open to the public.

La Costa considers itself a total
vacation resort with conference
center, two 18-hole golf courses, 23
tennis courts, a spa and health center,
and eight restaurants. The separate
locker room and spa facilities for
men and women offer sauna, steam
baths, whirlpools and solaria.
Medical and fitness evaluations are
conducted by a permanent staff
physician.
Rancho La Puerta is located
in Baja, Calif. (619)-294-8504). This
spa is known for its activity and
fitness program as well as its
vegetarian cuisine from the produce
of its own garden. It was founded by
Deborah Szekely long before she
founded the more expensive Golden
Door. Guests cite the landscape of
the Cuchama Mountain as part of the
holistic mind and body experience
at the spa.
The Golden Door, Escondido,
Calif. (619-744-5777), prescribes a
specific beauty treatment for each of
its 36 guests in a setting that looks
like a Japanese inn. For those
seriously seeking inner serenity,
there is a four-day course called the
Inner Door, which explores what the
spa calls the mind/body force.
