SPORTSWEAR: After work, if
up-and-coming
this
young
professional attends a casual event,
he really takes an opportunity to
express himself.
There's a trend away from
sportscoats in this category.
Expensive sweaters and leather
jackets can be worn with pleated
trousers.
Bold simplicity defines most
sportswear collections, with silh-
ouettes that can be adapted for both
a casual and a dressy mode. Color
is back for spring in three essential
palettes: icy cools — peach, morning
violet, blue grass and sand; nauticals
red, navy and white; tropicals
eggplant, sky blue, orchid and sea
green. Sweaters often are 100 percent
cotton, handknit or handframed in

"There is an easy elegance
to the overall silhouette,"
says Chip Tolbert of The
Men's Fashion Association.

cardigan and crewneck styles,
featuring solids, argyles and
geometric motifs.
Altogether, while sportswear is
more fashionable, it is definitely
more comfortable. Sweaters, jackets
and shirts have fuller shoulders,
and pants have fuller legs with
double and triple pleats.
Pants and shorts are designed in
silk and other natural fabrics as well
as comfortable rayon and viscose
fibers. Vests are an important
element of contemporary collec-
tions, often worn in place of a jacket.
FORMALWEAR: If our man is
planning a night on the town, more
than likely he will opt for black tie
dressing. If not, his slick, Italian silk
suit will suffice. But in most cases,
this guy owns his own tuxedo, and
delights at any opportunity to wear

it

"With the high cost of rentals
and the demand for more black tie
events, the yuppie is definitely
buying his own tuxedo nowadays,"
