week," she explains. "It takes time
for us to recognize a certain look and
then it captures our imagination."
Zlotescu believes, though, that
it is more than the clothes
themselves that sway our decisions.
"We try to find a hero from a
particular movie or television
program and then copy that look.
For whatever reason, Don Johnson
became a hero, so men tried to have
his look. Joan Collns became a
fashion trendsetter not because of
herself but because she was a role
model for women over 40," she says.
Zlotescu found herself in the
enviable position recently of starting
a fashion trend while working on a
film version of The Picture of Dorian
Gray, being filmed in Belfast,
Ireland. "All the costumes were made
from black taffeta and then painted
with gold trim," she explains. "Soon,
young people were coming to see
where they could buy the clothes.
When I told them they weren't
available in stores, they started
making them themselves. I'm sure
there are a lot of painted clothes in
Ireland right now."

he beat on the street is loud
and clear. Spring will definite-
ly start off with denim:
Original stonewash is back on
the street.
Dungarees reminiscent of the
'50s are everywhere rolled at the
ankle.
Madonna and friends are in cut-
offs rolled above the knee a la
Jennifer Grey in Dirty Dancing.
Vintage "hand-me-down" den-
im with oversized haberdasher vests
and bowler hats are on the streets of
London.
Ripped, torn and shredded
jeans are all over the streets of
St. Tropez.
Prim and proper denims herald
the Anglo-Preppie look in Paris.
Ethnic denims gain popularity
with young folk singers like Tracy
Chapman.
