the more it may cost and the more
irritating it may be because there's a
higher concentration of chemicals."

Block That Sun
Sunblock is an opaque
substance, such as zinc oxide or
titanium dioxide, that blocks or
reflects ultraviolet rays and does not
permit a tan. Last year, some
manufacturers got creative and
instead of the usual white-painted
noses and cheekbones, brightly
colored sunblock was seen on
beaches and tennis courts.
Revlon Zink It, a tinted, protec-
tive sunscreen formula with a 15 SPF,
comes in fashionable shades of
Cabana Banana, Orange U Cool and
Scuba Duba Pink.

Tanning Booths
Some people who use a UVA
(ultraviolet light) tanning booth think
that the tan they get will protect
them from a sunburn when
outdoors.
"They're wrong," says Blum.
"Going into a tanning booth first
before going south can actually
cause a worse burn. Moreover,
current research suggests that UVA
rays may lower the body's immune
system although the final report is
not out."

Sunscreens In Cosmetics
Even when using sunscreen or
sunblock underneath makeup, it's a
good idea to use a foundation that
also contains sunscreen. Look for the
word "sunscreen" or an SPF number
on the package, and be sure one of
the FDA-recommended sunscreens is
listed as an active ingredient. The
Skin Cancer Foundation recom-
mends a sunscreen with at least a 15
SPF.
Some products, such as Estee
Lauder's new Tinted Sunscreen SPF
6, provide immediate temporary
color plus a sunscreen. The sheer-
tinted product provides the look of
a light golden tan but washes away
with soap and water.
