by exposure to the sun, is rarely fatal
if treated. Another, more deadly
form of cancer associated with the
sun, malignant melanoma, is
increasing in number of cases.
Exposure can also lead to other
undesirable conditions, such as facial
blemishes, varicose veins, horny skin
growths and oral lesions. "If the
threat of developing skin cancer
doesn't encourage people to take
precautions when out in the sun,
then perhaps the threat of
developing unsightly skin blemishes
will," says Dr. Suzanne G. Haynes,
chief of the National Cancer
Institute's Health Promotion Sciences
branch. Today, there are a multitude
of products to protect you from
head to toe.

Sunscreens And SPF
Sun skin care is a $450 million
industry, with many people using
sunscreens for protection from the
harmful effects of the sun. Sun-
screens absorb most of the sun's rays
before they can penetrate the skin.
They are available in cream, oil,
lotion, alcohol and gel products.
Para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) is
among the most commonly used
chemical sunscreens.
Understanding the meaning of
the Sun Protection Factor (SPF)
ratings on sunscreens helps to
maximize protection. SPF measures
the potency of chemical sunscreens
by indicating how much the
sunscreen decreases the amount of
ultraviolet light reaching the skin.
The higher the SPF rating, the
"stronger" the sunscreen. Cosmetic
companies have added sunscreen
agents to many cosmetics, like
moisturizers, creams, foundations
and lipsticks.
"The industry knows that the
rating number is the most important
thing to look for when buying a
sunscreen," says Jon H. Blum,
dermatologist in Farmington Hills. I
recommend that my patients use at
least an SPF 15, which screens out
93 percent of the harmful rays.
Above 15, there is a difference, but
it becomes more insignificant the
higher you go. For example, SPF 50
screens out 99 percent; SPF 40, 98
