For Tinker's sake and for our's, let the claps be long and loud. Let Tinker know that we all do believe in fairies — if only for an instant. Let your kids know that you, too, have en- joyed far beyond measure this journey to Never-Never Land. And let NBC know, please, Peter Pan takes us to a place where our dreams once existed — and where they still do — and where our childhoods are still doing all their crazy, wonderful things deep, deep inside us. that when Peter crowed with happiness that he was flying, so did you. For tonight's Peter Pan is no hoary theatrical elephant clanking its ways through the years, something thought by a 1:,V producer somewhere worthy of a revival just because it is old and, therefore, venerable, but something true not only to the ebullient spirit of James M. Barrie's original book, but also true to the spirit of us all. 0 I !TRAVEL Reunion In Israel Is Set For June Call the: TOLL FREE: CUSTOM MIRRORS BY ETCHED GLASS Announces The Opening Of The had finally fulfilled itself. And then time itself stopped when Mary Martin flew for the first time and the entire theater, kids and adults, wat- ched as if she was, indeed, de- fying every known law of the universe. Not long after that, NBC had the wisdom to broadcast a live performance of the show. (This was the day before videotape.) Television was still something new then, something still trying to define itself. To many of us, the new technology of televi- sion, with its ability to link distant continents and faraway people, was perfectly matched to Peter Pan: Both in- spired wonder, both induced a feeling that just about anything was possible. These were the years when a special event on television was, in- deed, special; when TV, before the days of VCRs and cable and people watching every sort of imaginable divertisse- ment on that tube in their liv- ing room, could instill a sense of community around the na- tion. So when Mary Martin came flying into our living rooms, there was little chance any of us would ever forget it. And when Peter asked the television audience to clap to revive poor Tinker Bell, we clapped, all right. We clapped and we clapped and we clap- ped and, God almighty, little Tinker did blink back to life. A special presidential reu- nion mission in Israel for former Israel program par- ticipants is offered by the Israel Program Center under the auspices of the World Zionist Organization.
