Andres Lloyd Webber's

THE PHANTOM
OF THE OPERA

If you've been waiting for a
formal invitation to visit Israel,

Directed by Harold Prince

TORONTO

Mary Martin's soaring invita-
tion to join her in Never-
Never Land, to fly with her to
this place beyond magic and
beyond imagination, a place
that's "90 miles beyond the
moon," where "once you have
found your way there, you can
never, never go home." As
J.M. Barrie wrote in Peter Pan
and Wendy, his masterful
book on which tonight's show
is based, "Of all delectable
islands, Never-Never Land is
the snuggest and most com-
pact; not large and sprawly,
with tedious distances bet-
ween one adventure and
another, but nicely cramm-
ed."
Miss Martin, no stranger to
wholesome Broadway hits

(South Pacific, The Sound of
Music) has said that Peter Pan
was "the most important
thing I have ever done in
theater." She knew whereof
she spoke. South Pacific's
Nellie Forbush and all the
other good-hearted characters
played by Miss Martin could
not hold a candle to the lad
from Never-Never Land: He
came from a place that they
only dreamed about, a place
that only he, not they, could
go. It was a place, in fact, from
which inspiration sprang and
which had produced, in a
sense, all the other characters
into whose shoes Miss Martin
had stepped on Broadway.
I first saw Mary Martin in
her Peter mufti when I was 9
years old. This was my third
trip to a Broadway show:
Tickets were almost less ex-
pensive then than a candy
bar costs these days. But
although I was a Broadway
veteran, I knew there was
something special about the
show, and I insisted, nay,
demanded, that my parents
take me with them despite
the miserable cold and sore
throat I had been nursing for
more than a week. After all,
what red-blooded boy wants
to miss out on pirates and In-
dians and a glance at what
real boys — the Lost Boys —
would do if they were ever
lucky enough to get away
from all the "No, we don't do
that in our house" of their
parents?
Two notes into the overture
of Peter Pan, my sore throat
disappeared. My body ob-
viously wanted to soar with
Peter and was in no mood to
be encumbered by some silly
germs. (The darn sore throat
reappeared during the inter-
mission and again, somehow,
went into remission during
the second act.) I watched
Nana, the dog-nannie, tuck in
Wendy, Michael and John for
the night, saw a strange
shadow at the nursery win-
dow and knew that Broadway
