Sale of FINE ISRAELI ART and JEWISH CEREMONIAL OBJECTS TO BENEFIT player, in 1984. He earned a full basketball scholarship to Creighton, where he saw some action as a freshman under coach Willis Reed. Reed's resignation after that season led to Goldberg's disenchantment with Creighton. Goldberg saw little playing time in his sophomore season. "Once basketball didn't look very promising, I was pretty much set on transferring," says Goldberg. "Especially since my parents were in the process of looking to move out to Arizona." At ASU, Goldberg was a full-time student for two years. He gave basketball another try when ASU open- ed the door to walk-ons last fall. Goldberg beat out about 60 hopefuls to earn his position. Goldberg has never played for a Maccabi team because he always played for Country Day's summer team. He has never been to Israel. "It would just be a fantastic ex- perience," he says. Goldberg has not been in the Detroit area in the past 18 months, but he hopes to visit relatives here this sum- mer. If things go as he plans, he will schedule that visit around his trip to Israel. The North Farmington High School junior was in- vited to try out for the U.S. Maccabiah basketball team by head coach Ben Braun. "He's a very fine player," says Braun. "He's always ex- celled against better competi- tion . . . He's not a big kid but he's got a lot of heart." While no statistics are available on the past 12 Mac- cabiah basketball teams, it is considered rare for high school players to even be ask- ed to try out. The youngest player on the 1985 squad was a high school graduate. His lack of experience will make Hoffman's task dif- ficult, says Braun. "It's going to be a tough job for him to make the team," he says. But Braun, the head coach at Eastern Michigan University, calls Hoffman "a fighter. He's a competitor. Those are qualities that you like to see in a young player." If Hoffman accepts the in- vitation, he will likely attend a regional tryout in Chicago, April 14-15. Braun expects approximately 200 players to try out at the three regional sites, which include Los Angeles and Boston. Braun and assistant Mike Cohen, assitant coach at Wichita State University, will select a manageable group for the final tryout in Washington, D.C., April 21-22.
