China Attends
Book Fair

Jerusalem (JTA) —
Publishers from 42 nations
are exhibiting an estimated
100,000 titles at the 14th
Jerusalem International
Book Fair, one of the largest
exhibits ever.
One of the key attractions is
the participation of the
Chinese writers association.
Phoenix Peng Zi, a member
of the board of directors of the
Chinese association, and her
husband, Sha Bulli — former-
ly Sidney Shapiro, of
American Jewish descent —
said they had been sent by
the Chinese authorities on a
fact-finding mission for the
publishers in China.
Delegations from the Soviet
Union, Fiji, Sri Lanka and
Nepal are also participating.
Other attractions in the fair
are an exhibit of the 47 books
of famed Egyptian writer
Naguib Mahfouz, winner of
the 1988 Nobel Prize for
Literature; a 50-yard-long
Megilat Esther, in a
decorated edition published
by Hungary's Halikon
publishing house; and
Salman Rushdie's controver-
sial book The Satanic Verses,
displayed by the Steimatzky
book agency.

London (JTA) — A native of
Newcastle, England, is angry
that she's considered Jewish
in Israel but not in her
hometown.
Paula Cohen, 34, is plann-
ing legal action against the
chief rabbi of the London
Beth Din for his refusal to
recognize her conversion to
Judaism.
Over a decade ago, Cohen
worked as a volunteer on a
kibbutz in Israel and decided
to convert to Judaism. The
conversion, performed by an
Israeli Beth Din headed by
Rabbi Shlomo Goren, the
former Ashkenazic chief
rabbi, specified on the cer-
tificate that it was not valid
outside Israel.
Rabbi Goren based his
ruling on "a little known rab-
binic source which he
understands as implying that
the sanctity of the land of
Israel somehow assists in the
`acceptance' of converts."
Paula married a fellow kib-
butznik, Yossi Cohen, in a
Reform ceremony in Britain,
although Jewish law forbids
Cohens — descendants of the
priestly caste — from marry-
ing converts. The couple had
three children, all born in
Israel.
