n the aftermath of sharp
U.S. protests, Israeli Air
Force colonel Aviem Sella
has lost his three-week ap-
pointment to a senior position
of a major Israeli defense
company.
Sella, who was indicted in
March 1987 by a U.S. federal
grand jury on three counts of
espionage related to the
Jonathan Pollard spy ring,
had taken a leave of absence
from the Air Force to serve as
a consultant to Electro-Optics
Industries, Ltd. of Rehovot,
better known as El-Op.
Defense News, a respected
Washington military publica-
tion which last week had
editorially blasted the Sella
appointment, quotes Nati
Sharony, El-Op's president
and chief executive officer as

saying in the forthcoming
issue: "Though it is true that
we did intend to employ him
as a consultant to a project
outside the normal scope of
our activities, this intention
did not materialize."
Pentagon spokesman Dan
Howard told reporters on
March 16 that "U.S. officials
abroad or contractors on U.S.
official business" would not
conduct
"government
business with individuals
who are under indictment by
the U.S. government."
Howard said the United
States had not independent-
ly clarified Sella's status with
El- Op, but conceded that it
the would restrict contact
with the company if Sella was
hired.
According to Defense News,
a substantial portion of El-
Op's $100 million in annual
sales involves exports to the
United States military. Sella's
continued involvement with
the company could have
jeopardized those sales.
Phil
Giaramita,
a
spokesman for Martin

Marietta, an American
defense firm which works
with El-Op, was quoted as
saying: "We were informed by
El-Op that Col. Sella is no
longer associated with the
company?'
Defense News said that
Sella was hired by El-Op on
March 1 as a special consul-
tant to head a classified pro-
ject involving advanced
technology for potential ex-
port to the United States and
other countries.
Quoting Israeli industry
sources, the publication said
that Sella had been "on loan,"
or detailed, to the company by
the Air Force, where he re-
tains an active duty status.
In early 1984, Sella, while
on leave from the Air Force to
study at New York Universi-
ty, was involved in the recruit-
ment of Pollard, then a
civilian intelligence analyst
for the U.S. Navy. For some 18
months, until his arrest in
November 1985, Pollard pro-
vided thousands of top secret
U.S. documents to a since-
disbanded scientific in-
telligence gathering unit of
the Defense Ministry.
After pleading guilty to es-
pionage for Israel, Pollard
was sentenced to life in
prison. He will become eligi-
ble for parole after serving 10
years. Sella was indicted just
prior to Pollard's sentencing.
At the time, Sella had just
been appointed commander of
the Tel Nof Air Base near Tel
Aviv. But in the face of an
angry U.S. reaction, including
threats to boycott the base,
the appointment was
withdrawn.
Sella instead went to work
at the IDF staff college.
