Jewish immigrants had
barely settled in their new
home, the United States,-
when they set out to establish
a theater.
By August 1882, a Yiddish
theater had opened in New
York. Five years later, Yid-
dish plays were being
presented in Detroit, accor-
ding to James Miller's The
Detroit Yiddish Theater.
Yet it was not until August
1924, when Abraham Litt-
man opened the Circle
Theater, later renamed Litt-
man's Peoples Theater, that
the Yiddish theater began to
thrive in Detroit.
Born in 1880 in Russia,
Littman came in 1895 to the
United States. Not long after
he arrived in New York, Litt-
man saw his first Yiddish
play at the Thalia Theater.
He was so delighted he began
seeing plays whenever he
could.
Littman established several
small Yiddish companies in
New York before he began at
the Circle Theater in Detroit.
It was located at 2814
Hastings Street, cost
$250,000 and seated 1,000.
Admission prices ranged from
75 cents to $2.00 for an even-
ing performance and 50 cents
to $1.65 for matinees.
Some of the most famous
Yiddish stars, including Paul
Muni and Moishe Oysher, ap-
peared on the Littman stage.
When Molly Picon came to
town, ticket prices jumped to
$2.50.
Jack Bernardi, in his book
My Father, the Actor,
remembers his parents ap-
pearing at the Circle Theater
in Detroit.
