that is likely to result in the
eventual establishment of a
PLO _ state in Israel's
heartland.
A few months ago, the
JACongress paid the Jaffee
Center for Strategic Studies
(at TelAviv University) to
analyze possible solutions to
the Arab-Israeli conflict, and
— surprise! — the center's
just-released final report
recommends that Israel make
more concessions to the
Arabs, be gentler with Arab
rioters, and permit the
establishment of a PLO state
over a period of 10-15 years.
Was this a serious academic
study — or a well-financed
publicity stunt designed to
make headlines and thereby
put more pressure on Israel?
At a time when Israel's
back is to the wall and its old
friends are abandoning it in
droves, American Jewish
organizations have a moral
obligation to stand with the
Jewish state. The American
Jewish Congress has not
fulfilled that obligation.

Saudi Influence
In Naylor's Opinion

The March 13 Detroit Free
Press article titled "Israel
Stands in the way of U.S.-
Soviet Detente," is an illustra-
tion of the power of the Saudi-
Arabian petro-dollar and its
corrupting influence. I am
ashamed for Duke University,
where the alleged author is a
professor of economics.
Since 1977 when Saudi
Arabia started funding the
study of the Arabian Penin-
sula, to quote Steven Emer-
son from his book The
American House of Saud, ". . .
the, program at Duke has
emerged less along the lines
of a typical academic program
and more like a de facto
southern branch of the Saudi
embassy."
If you had difficulty follow-
ing the logic of the article, the
reason is obvious: the
translator had trouble
translating into English some
of the high-blown Arabic
rhetoric in which it was ob-
viously written.
The article begins: "The
Jackson-Vanik Amendment,
passed by Congress in 1974 in
response to pressure from
Jewish groups, did more to
chill U.S.-Soviet relations and
end detente than either the
Soviet intervention in
Afghanistan or the declara-
tion of martial law in Poland?'
The statement is an insult
to the intelligence of all
Polish Americans who were
outraged by the declaration of
martial law and the outlaw-

.

ing of Solidarity. Further-
more, where did Mr. Naylor
get his facts, and who in
Russia gave him that opi-
nion? What polls did he or the
Saudis conduct?
He also says: "The Jackson-
Vanik Amendment was the
beginning of the end of
detente."
He contradicts himself
when he points out that bet-
ween 1974, and 1979, Jewish
emigration increased,
reaching a high of 51,320 in
1979. He then points out that
after 1979, it "decreased
precipitously?' averaging on-
ly 1,066 per year.
1979, of course, was the year
Russia invaded Afghanistan,
and President Carter and the
rest of the world were outrag-
ed . . .
The last point I would like
to make (there are many
others), concerns the state-
ment: "The United States is
one of the few countries that
consistently uses trade sanc-
tions to impose its political
will on other nations."
Even a casual review of
world trade practices reveals
that the statement is not true.
The most flagrant use of trade
sanctions to impose their
political will on other nations
are the Arab countries in
general, and most outstand-
ing is Saudi Arabia .. .
If the professor was at-
tempting to do anything
about U.S.-Soviet relations,
the least he could have done
was to stick to the issue, and
not follow the Saudi line,
which is to blame Israel for
all the troubles in the world.

Tour Of Israel:
Warm, Lonesome
I just returned from a two-

week tour of Israel and, like
many others, I feel compelled
to pass the word along to the
people who have been just
thinking of going.
We traveled from Jerusalem
to Tel Aviv and from the
Golan Heights to the Gaza
and found it to be a once-in-
a-lifetime experience. Not a
stone was thrown and we
found nothing but acceptance
and warmth.
The only irritating thing
about the trip was to go into
a retaurant and find
ourselves to be the only
customers. Tourism is down.
The Israelis have done all
the hard work. All we have to
do is go there and support
them — it's our obligation.
They need us and we need
them. In four words, "Let Our
People Go."
