JEWISH NEWS!

Fifty-Year Record:
Wed Three Times

B

oth worked at Port-
ney's on Dexter and
Monterey, where Mor-
ris Robbins, also an employee
there, introduced them . . . (a
second Portney's was on Dex-
ter and Waverly) . . . Two
years later, 18-year-old
Magene Markovitz and
24-year-old Sam Richman
went to Indiana to become
man and wife, March 5, 1939.
Although already an "I Do"
couple, Magene and Sam con-
tinued to live apart for eight
weeks . . . at the homes of
their parents . . . until July 2,
1939, when they wed in
Jewish ceremony in the rab-
bi's study at Congregation
B'nai Moshe on Dexter.
Fifty happy years later,
Magene and Sam celebrated
their golden anniversary at
R.I.K.'s restaurant, where
their barrister daughter
Denise Alexander and son
Martin Richman feted them
with 48 guests.
At Temple Shir Shalom ser-
vices the evening prior, they
were surprisedly called up by
Rabbi Dannel Schwartz to
take their vows again (for the
third time) . . . When Rabbi
Schwartz asked Sam if he
took Magene for his lawful
wedded wife, Sam raised his
arms and exclaimed, "I sure
do!"
All kinds of surprises .. .
Daughter Rochelle Gray com-
ing • in from Tarzana with
hubby-to-be John lbsorieno
. .. They'll take Magene and
Sam on a 10-day Caribbean
cruise where Rochelle and
John may be romantically
married on the high seas, he
says, if not sooner.
Slide show cleverly nar-
rated by Denise with
humorous clips were enjoyed
by all . . . especially those of
Magene and her oodles of
bathing suits and hats .. .
and Sam as a baby with un-
tied shoelaces which Denise
remarked probably promoted
him to go into the shoe
business.
Festive balloons, music of
Ziggy Bela Quartet...
Magene's brother Alla
n
Marks in from Dallas where
he's lived past 15 years and
back in the car business .. .
Nora Gold in West Palm
Beach, Fla., nine years, still
keeping up membership with
Tikvah B'nai B'rith Chapter
here . . . Kal Soskin never
changing . . . Irene Schlussel
and memories of Helen's Shop
on 12th Street, then Maurice

Shop on Dexter and to Liver-
nois . . . Hubby Bernie look-
ing wonderful at 85 . . .
Rochelle Gray taking pictures
when she could get her
camera's button to click .. .
Rochelle's birthday was two
days following the anniver-
sary . . . Al and Sarah
Rosenberg never looking bet-
ter together . . . May and Bill
Cherish in from Florida .. .
Bea Richman, Sam's sister-in-
law, in from Ft. Lauderdale,
Fla. . . . Ida Lucas' daughter,
Marilyn Hapsberg, back from
Chicago to take executive
post with Florine Mark-Ross
at Weight Watchers here.
The 50th anniversay of
Magene and Sam Richman
was a lovely occasion . . .

Although married,
Sam and Magene
lived at their
parents' homes for
two months until
the Jewish
ceremony.

planned and coordinated by
Denise, who probably had one
thing in mind . . . to make it
in as good taste as the good
years Magene and Sam have
spent together.
GET WELL Wishes . . . to
Lou Golden.
DON'T HAVE to be a
mason to attend . . . it's open
to the public . . . affair by
Perfection Lodge 486, F. &
A.M., at CMI Health and Ten-
nis Club, Southfield Road
south of 13 Mile . . . March
29, 7 p.m. . . . Dancing to Jim
Laurie's music . . . Perfection
gents to call are Dan Natow,
P.M., 353-2891 or 836-3535
days, and Bob Leach, P.M.,
967-4115.
CONGRATS . . . to Shirlee
and Jack Iden . . . on their
40th anniversary.
NEXT LEG on lecture tour
by local noted platic surgeon,
Dr. Marshall Shapiro, will be
Italy, May 12-20 . . . He'll talk
on the two papers he has had
published, "An Eight-Year
Comparison of Breast Im-
pants" and "The Spectrum of
Skin Cancer"
IT'S HERE AGAIN . . .
Crescent Shrine day at the
Shrine Circus . . . 1,200
youngsters will be Crescent
guests, March 22 . . . If
anything is left, brunch will
be at 11 a.m. in the State Fair
Grounds colliseum . . . Albert
"Sunny" Goldstein is chair-
man . . . I liked it much bet-
ter at Rialto Cafe where the
volunteers could sit and relax.
